People often ask me what is my favorite cruise. Without skipping a beat, the answer is Windstar.
The small ships, being able to sail into ports the big ships can’t get it and a great relaxing and romantic cruise was what I loved.
I sailed on them from Venice to Rome. Sailing from the port of Venice, people flowed out from St. Mark’s Square to watch us leave with full sails open.
On the sea day from Corfu to Taormina, the captain comes on the intercom to invite everyone to come up on deck for lunch. They were serving grilled lobster which we enjoy under full sail and a brilliant clear sky.
The night we left Taormina, the captain again comes on the PA and tells us to gather up on desk as we sail by the island of Stromboli. We got near the island, it was pitch black at night and we watched the live volcano erupt and watch the lava, glowing, flow down the side of the mountain and into the sea. Spectacular entertainment.
After a while the captain said we needed to move on if we were to be in Sorrento by morning.
The next morning we awoke, docked in Sorrento. A short walk up the steps and we found ourselves in downtown Sorrento. You could see the buses that had brought in passengers from the big cruise ships that had to dock in Naples.
For dining we could sit where we wanted and when we wanted and dress casually, think country club casual.
Yes no cruise since has matched that one and I would go back on Windstar at anytime.
My friend Ralph Grizzle, with the Avid Cruiser, just did a great story on Windstar and their new President and what his plans are for Windstar.
So don’t take my word on what a cruise on Windstar is like. Click here to read Ralph Grizzle’s story.
