October 2, 2026 — Torrential rain under a red weather alert flooded parts of Spain’s Mediterranean coast on October 1 and 2, cutting rail service between Valencia and Catalonia. The red alert has since been lowered, but heavy rain is forecast to continue through the weekend and to spread south and to the Balearic Islands.
The storm
- Alerts: Spain’s weather agency AEMET issued red alerts on October 1 for Valencia, later extended to Castellón and southern Tarragona, and an orange alert for northern Alicante.
- Latest status: by Friday afternoon the red alert had been downgraded to yellow, The Olive Press reports. Orange alerts now cover parts of Andalucía, Murcia and the Balearic Islands, and are expected to last at least until Wednesday.
- Rainfall: more than 250 litres per square metre fell in parts of Tarragona, and 150 to 170 or more in Castellón.
- Impact: 18 people were rescued from vehicles in Catalonia. More than 2,500 customers lost power in Tarragona. Schools closed for more than 411,000 pupils in the Valencia region. The reports we read mentioned no deaths.
- Trains: Valencia commuter (Cercanías) lines were suspended for inspection, and some have resumed. Renfe Euromed and Intercity trains between Valencia and Catalonia were cancelled or changed. The R16 line between Tarragona and Tortosa was suspended. Some roads were closed.
- Flights: one travel outlet says flights are operating with possible delays. Check with your airline.
Strikes ahead

Spain’s transport ministry has also posted minimum-service orders, valid through November 30, for three ongoing airport disputes: Groundforce ground handling at Barcelona-El Prat, Saerco control-tower staff at nine smaller airports (including Sevilla, Vigo, A Coruña, Jerez, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura), and baggage-system staff at Madrid-Barajas.
What it means for airline travelers
- Valencia, Castellón and Tarragona: check Renfe before any train trip this weekend. If your train is cancelled, ask Renfe about a refund or a change to a later train.
- Heading south or to the islands: orange alerts now cover parts of Andalucía, Murcia and the Balearics into next week. Watch AEMET warnings and your flight status.
- Never drive through floodwater. Follow instructions from local civil protection.
- Murcia on Thursdays in October: plan a taxi or allow extra time. Minimum service will be limited.
- Zaragoza: watch for the October 7 vote result if you are visiting after October 19.
- Standby travelers: weather cancellations fill later flights quickly. Keep a buffer day before any must-make connection home.
