1. Hermanus Whale Festival — Hermanus, Western Cape, South Africa
When: October 2–4, 2026
An eco-marine festival timed to southern right whale season, when the animals can be seen from the town’s cliff paths. Add a Saturday street parade, live music at Gearing’s Point, craft markets and a classic car show.
Nearest airport: Cape Town International (CPT), about 110–120 km away.
Getting there: There is no rail link. Drive about 1.5 hours via the N2 and R43, or pre-book a shuttle.
Good to know: Free entry. The official programme lists events on Friday and Saturday, so check the site before going on Sunday.

2. MOGA Festival — Essaouira, Morocco
When: Through October 4, 2026
The tenth-anniversary edition of a boutique electronic music, art and wellness festival on the Atlantic coast. The ticketed main event runs October 2–4 across four stages at a resort in Diabat, just outside the walled town.
Nearest airport: Essaouira-Mogador (ESU), about 15 km away, with limited service. Marrakech Menara (RAK), about 180 km, is the main gateway.
Getting there: From ESU, a taxi takes about 20 minutes. From Marrakech, Supratours and CTM buses take about three hours; a private transfer takes about 2.5.
Good to know: Tickets are required.

3. Lake of Stars — Nkhotakota, Lake Malawi, Malawi
When: October 2–4, 2026
A long-running lakeshore festival of music, fashion, poetry and workshops, staged on the beach. It is one of the most scenic festival settings on the continent.
Nearest airport: Lilongwe Kamuzu International (LLW), roughly 200 km away. Most itineraries connect via Johannesburg, Addis Ababa or Nairobi.
Getting there: By road, about 3 to 3.5 hours by hire car or private transfer.
Good to know: Ticketed. Check Malawi’s visa rules before you travel.

4. Toyota Stellenbosch Woordfees — Stellenbosch, South Africa
When: October 3–11, 2026
Nine days of theatre, music, visual art, books and wine in the heart of the Cape Winelands. Much of the programme is in Afrikaans, but the music, art and food need no translation.
Nearest airport: Cape Town International (CPT), about 35 km away.
Getting there: A rental car or pre-booked transfer is the easiest way out to Stellenbosch, about half an hour by road.
Good to know: Shows are ticketed individually.

5. Akbank Jazz Festival — Istanbul, Turkey
When: Through October 11, 2026
A citywide jazz festival that has run since 1991, with concerts in venues ranging from the Byzantine Hagia Eirene to clubs and concert halls. It is an excellent add-on to an Istanbul trip.
Nearest airport: Istanbul Airport (IST), about 40 km from Beyoğlu. Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) serves the Asian side.
Getting there: M11 metro from IST to Gayrettepe, then the M2 line; Havaist airport buses and taxis (45–75 minutes) are the alternatives.
Good to know: Tickets are sold per concert.

6. El Gouna Film Festival — El Gouna, Red Sea, Egypt
When: October 15–23, 2026
Egypt’s most glamorous film festival, with red carpets and Arab and international premieres in a lagoon resort town. It pairs easily with Red Sea diving and beach time.
Nearest airport: Hurghada International (HRG), about 25–30 km away. Cairo (CAI) is the larger gateway.
Getting there: Taxi or hotel transfer, 30–40 minutes. From Cairo, take a domestic flight to Hurghada or a coach of five to six hours.
Good to know: Screenings are ticketed. Most visitors need an Egyptian visa.
