October 7, 2026 — Update to our October 6 story. The opposition PTI march changed course on Wednesday and headed for Khyber district instead of moving straight through Peshawar. Authorities have blocked the Attock bridge, the main road link into Punjab, with shipping containers. The government repeated its offer of talks.

What changed

  • New route: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi said the convoy would go to Khyber district first and then to Peshawar. It camped overnight at Mattani and was due to leave at 2 pm on October 7.
  • Timing now uncertain: A PTI official told Dawn the convoy still aims to reach Khairabad, on the Punjab border, by Thursday, October 8. Daily Times gives no date for that leg. Afridi said the march would move on Islamabad when the party decides. The Islamabad date is TBA.
  • Attock bridge blocked: Dawn reports steel containers and sandbags on the bridge that carries the Grand Trunk Road between Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab. The provincial governor says the march will not be allowed past Attock.
  • Talks: The government again offered talks on Wednesday but said demands cannot be met by holding the state “hostage”. PTI leaders said the protest will continue.
  • Still in force: Punjab’s ban on gatherings runs through October 15. Similar bans apply in several Khyber Pakhtunkhwa districts.
  • Under discussion: Dawn quotes unnamed officials as saying emergency rule in the province is being considered if marchers try to force their way into Islamabad. No decision has been announced.

Not confirmed today

  • We found no report of new motorway closures, clashes or a new mobile internet shutdown on October 7.
  • No report mentioned Islamabad airport access or flights.

What it means for airline travelers

  • Do not plan road travel between Peshawar and Islamabad. The Attock crossing is blocked, and the convoy’s route to the border follows the M-1 motorway toward Swabi.
  • The flashpoint is Khairabad and Attock, from Thursday at the earliest. Avoid the area.
  • Islamabad and Lahore airports: No disruption has been reported, but containers around Islamabad can lengthen the drive. Leave early and confirm your route with your hotel.
  • Mobile data can be cut at short notice. Download boarding passes, hotel details and maps before you travel.
  • Standby travelers should hold a confirmed backup out of Islamabad or Lahore in case roads close.
  • Register with STEP (US) or Registration of Canadians Abroad, and stay away from all gatherings.
