October 13, 2026 — Lufthansa’s four-engine Airbus A340-600 has its last week in service. The final scheduled passenger flight is LH419 from Washington Dulles on Sunday, October 18. It is due in Frankfurt the next morning, October 19.
What happened
- Final flight: LH419, Washington Dulles (IAD) to Frankfurt (FRA), departing October 18 and landing October 19. This ends more than 20 years of A340-600 flying at Lufthansa.
- Current routes: The last A340-600s are flying Frankfurt–Washington and Frankfurt–New York JFK.
- Why now: Lufthansa first planned to retire the type at the end of 2025. Delays to Boeing 787-9 and 777X deliveries kept it flying longer. In April 2026 Lufthansa confirmed the last four would go in October, as part of cutting six long-haul aircraft at the end of the summer schedule because of high fuel prices and financial pressure.
- History: The A340-600 joined the fleet in 2003. In 2020 the whole fleet of 17 was parked in Teruel, Spain, and some returned from 2021 as demand recovered.
- What’s next for the jets: German charter and ACMI operator USC Aero is buying five former Lufthansa A340-600s. Two will fly again and three will be broken up for parts.
- Other fleet moves: Two Boeing 747-400s will be parked for the winter from October, with a farewell planned for next year. Lufthansa’s smaller A340-300s stay in service for now, and fleet plans point to their retirement in 2027.
- Riyadh: Lufthansa Group has cancelled all its Riyadh flights through October 16 because of the attacks on the airport.
What it means for non-revs
- Enthusiasts: this is your last chance. If you want a final A340-600 flight, aim for the IAD and JFK flights this week, ending with LH419 on October 18. Farewell flights attract aviation fans, so expect LH419 to fill up. Check loads early and have a backup.
- Aircraft type after October 18: Lufthansa has not said which aircraft will take over the IAD and JFK flights. Seat counts may change, which affects standby chances, so check the equipment before you list.
- Lufthansa’s long-haul fleet is smaller. Six long-haul aircraft are leaving at the end of summer and two 747-400s are being parked. With fewer seats this winter, transatlantic loads on Lufthansa may be tighter.
