DALLAS–FORT WORTH, Texas — October 16, 2026. Thunderstorms and strong winds forced the FAA to slow and at times halt arrivals into Dallas Fort Worth International (DFW), American Airlines’ largest hub, on Thursday evening, with some flights held on the ground for more than four hours.

What happened

  • The FAA put a ground delay program in place for DFW-bound flights after storms cut the airport’s ability to accept arrivals at its normal rate. The FAA advisory said thunderstorms “reduced the airport’s ability to handle arriving aircraft.”
  • Ground stops were also issued during the afternoon and evening of Thursday, October 15. Exact start and end times of the ground stops: TBA (not published in the report).
  • The delay program covered arrivals from 23:15 UTC October 15 to 02:59 UTC October 16 (6:15 p.m. to 9:59 p.m. Dallas time).
  • Because the restrictions held flights at their origin airports, the knock-on effect reached flights bound for DFW from across the U.S.
  • By early Friday, October 16, the FAA’s status page showed departure and arrival delays at DFW back to 15 minutes or less.

Delay figures (FAA traffic management)

Measure Figure
Average assigned delay 51 minutes
Longest assigned delay 245 minutes (4 hours 5 minutes)
Cancellations on October 15 TBA (not reported)
Status early October 16 Delays of 15 minutes or less

These are assigned traffic-management delays, not necessarily what every passenger experienced. This was the second storm disruption at DFW in roughly two weeks; an earlier round caused more than 150 cancellations.

What it means for non-revs

  • Expect tight loads today. Passengers who misconnected or were delayed Thursday night are being reaccommodated on Friday flights out of DFW, which will squeeze standby seats, especially on the first departures of the day.
  • Watch the evening bank. Storms that build in the afternoon can trigger new ground stops; if you are connecting through DFW late in the day, have a backup flight in mind.
  • Consider alternates. For travel within Texas or onward to the West, Dallas Love Field or other hubs may offer better odds when DFW is recovering.
  • Carry on. During irregular operations, checked bags are more likely to miss a rebooked standby flight.
