October 19, 2026 — UK river cruise and escorted tour operator Riviera Travel has launched a holiday guarantee for all its river cruises and tours. The promise grew out of commitments Riviera made during this autumn’s low water on the Rhine and Danube.
What the guarantee says
Riviera told Travel Weekly the guarantee gives travel agents “a clear and reassuring message” for their clients. It covers every escorted tour and river cruise holiday the company sells. It has five commitments:
- Keep agents and customers informed.
- Let customers stay in control of their choices.
- Not compromise on the quality of the holiday.
- Support customers during their trip.
- Keep customers’ money safe.
If disruption forces “a significant change,” Riviera says it will help customers continue, move or cancel their trip. It also promises a consistent approach to compensation. No refund amounts, compensation figures or start date were published (TBA).
The announcement comes after weeks of low water on Europe’s rivers. Riviera has cancelled or changed several Rhine and Danube departures this month.
Travel Weekly also noted a Sunday Times report that Riviera’s private equity owners may be looking at a sale. Riviera declined to comment.
What it means for airline travelers
- If you are booked on a Riviera river cruise and water levels force a big change, you should be offered a choice to continue, move or cancel. Ask Riviera or your agent how the option you pick affects any flights you booked yourself.
- River cruise itineraries can change at short notice in low water. When flying standby to Europe, aim to arrive at least a day early and keep your return flexible in case the start or end city changes.
- Nonrefundable flights are not covered by a cruise line’s guarantee unless it says so. Check what your travel insurance covers.
- Riviera did not mention any travel-industry or interline rates.
