October 19, 2026 — In a televised address on Sunday, October 18, President Emmanuel Macron condemned the weekend’s nationwide rioting and looting. He told prefects to work with mayors to protect public buildings and businesses in the coming weeks, including by banning protests when necessary. The arrest count from Saturday’s cost-of-living protests has risen to at least 2,400 nationwide. The national strike called for November 5 is still on.

What’s new since our last update

  • Macron’s address: Macron said he felt “anger” and “shame” over attempts “to bring down the Republic” and vowed that looters would pay for the damage. Al Jazeera reports he promised more security and a crisis unit to provide urgent aid to people in difficulty. He did not declare a state of emergency or a curfew. AP (via PBS) reports he told prefects to work with mayors in the coming weeks to protect public buildings and businesses, including banning protests where needed.
  • Arrests and injuries: The Interior Ministry reported nearly 2,400 arrests on Saturday, October 17, and about 1,000 police and gendarmes injured. In the Paris region, 855 people were arrested and prosecutors said 557 were still in custody. Paris police said one person died of a heart attack, and prosecutors are investigating.
  • Where the damage was: AP reports clashes, tear gas and looting around Place de la République and in Paris shopping and tourist districts. Fire badly damaged the 19th-century city hall in Limoges, and its roof collapsed. In Marseille, protesters briefly forced their way into the city hall lobby and a police station was damaged. A fire broke out inside a tourist office in Lyon. Protesters were seriously injured in Mulhouse and Saint-Étienne.
  • Still unsettled: Bloomberg (via Insurance Journal) reports that clashes continued in Paris even after Macron spoke, and that French markets fell on Monday.

What it means for airline travelers

  • Stay away from protests. Saturday’s violence hit central Paris tourist and shopping areas and several regional city centres. If you see a march forming, leave the area. Check local news before going into city centres on weekends.
  • Expect more police and possible bans. Local protest bans may be announced at short notice. Follow the prefecture and local media for the city you are visiting.
  • Plan around November 5. If you are flying standby into or out of France that week, aim to travel a day or two either side of the strike. Seats may tighten as ticketed passengers rebook, and trains or the metro to the airport may be disrupted.
  • Getting to the airport: On protest or strike days, allow extra time, and have a taxi or private-transfer option in case public transport is cut.
  • Register: Americans can enroll in STEP, and Canadians in Registration of Canadians Abroad, to get local alerts.
  • Insurance: Policies often exclude losses from civil unrest that was already known when you bought cover, so check the wording before you book.
