SYDNEY, Australia — October 24, 2026 — Update to our earlier coverage. Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport at Badgerys Creek opens to passengers on Sunday, October 25, with Jetstar’s first flight to the Gold Coast at 11 a.m. Air New Zealand starts the first international service the next day. New details out this week: the rail link is still delayed, so buses are the main way in, and the airport is the first in Australia to drop paper arrival cards.
What’s happening
- Opening day: Sunday, October 25. Jetstar flight JQ362 to the Gold Coast departs at 11 a.m. PS News reports that tickets for the first service sold out after going on sale in June.
- No curfew: The airport has an approved 24-hour licence, so it has no curfew.
- Location and size: About 41 km west of the Sydney CBD, with capacity for 10 million passengers a year at opening.
- Rail is not ready: The Metro line from St Marys to Bradfield via the airport is delayed, with no new date given. Time Out says the Metro connection is expected by the 2030s. The toll-free M12 motorway into the airport is still under construction.
- Buses: A “Super Shuttle WSI” electric bus runs express and direct services to Parramatta CBD, Sydney CBD and Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport. PS News lists one-way adult fares of $25 to Parramatta, $55 to the Sydney CBD and $65 to Kingsford Smith. FlixBus also serves Parramatta and Canberra.
- No paper arrival cards: The airport will use the web-based Australia Travel Declaration instead of paper incoming passenger cards. Travelers can complete it up to 72 hours before travel and get a QR code to leave the airport. Paper cards remain available.

What it means for non-revs
- Opening-week flights will be busy. The first Jetstar flight sold out months ago, and launch-week novelty traffic is likely on other early departures too. Expect slim standby chances in the first days and have a backup via Sydney Kingsford Smith.
- Low frequencies mean long waits if you miss out. Air New Zealand’s Auckland flight runs three times a week, and Jetstar’s Gold Coast and Brisbane flights only a few times a week. If you don’t clear, the next flight on that route may be days away, so a SYD routing is the realistic fallback.
- Plan the ground leg. There is no train, and the motorway into the airport is still being built. Allow extra road time, and budget for the shuttle if you need to switch between WSI and Kingsford Smith ($65 one way, per PS News).
- Fill in the travel declaration before you fly in. Arriving internationally at WSI, complete the online Australia Travel Declaration up to 72 hours before travel to get your QR code. Paper cards are still available as a backup.
- Late-running flights can still operate. WSI has no curfew, so a delayed departure from there is less likely to be cancelled for running late at night.
- Check your pass eligibility. Confirm with your airline’s pass bureau that your travel privileges cover Jetstar, Air New Zealand and the other carriers at WSI before you plan around them.
