October 26, 2026 — Mexican truckers began an open-ended national strike on Monday morning, October 26, with slow-moving caravans and trucks parked along highways in more than a dozen states, including the main roads in and out of Mexico City. Offshore, Vance has weakened to a tropical storm and is expected to keep weakening, with no coastal warnings for Mexico in place.
Truckers’ national strike
- Who: The strike was called by the national freight transport chamber CANACAR along with the trucking groups Fematrac, Hamotac and Indeco. Another group, ANTAC, withdrew its support. SafeAbroad, citing the organizers, put the number of trucks potentially involved at 1.2 million.
- When: From Monday, October 26, with protests starting between about 6:00 and 8:00 a.m. local time. It is described as indefinite; no end date has been set (TBA).
- How: Organizers say the protests are peaceful, with trucks on shoulders and side lanes or moving in slow convoys, and no full road closures. Heavy traffic is still expected.
- Why: Truckers want better highway security against extortion and cargo theft, regulation of tow-truck and impound fees, and changes to the 2027 federal revenue law, including proposed cuts to their tax incentives.
- Government: The Interior Ministry (Segob) said most organizations had agreed to talks, but CANACAR kept its strike call.

Tropical Storm Vance
As of the US National Hurricane Center’s 3 a.m. CST advisory on Monday, Vance was a tropical storm with top winds of 65 mph, moving slowly northwest well off Mexico’s Pacific coast and “likely to weaken.” No watches or warnings for Mexico were listed. Local civil protection officials in Colima and Jalisco said moisture from the storm could still bring rain to Colima and were watching the Jalisco coast; one forecast had the center passing about 189 km from Cabo Corrientes, Jalisco, between Wednesday afternoon, October 28, and early Thursday, October 29.
What it means for airline travelers
- Leave much earlier for the airport if you are flying out of Mexico City, especially AIFA (Felipe Ángeles), whose Chamapa–Lechería access is on the protest list. Standby travelers who miss a flight because of traffic may find later flights full.
- Consider rail options in the capital: local reports point to the Tren Suburbano, Tren Felipe Ángeles, Tren El Insurgente and the Metro as ways around road blockades.
- Avoid long road trips between cities while the strike lasts, and check Guardia Nacional and Capufe updates before driving.
- Stay away from protest sites, and keep extra time in your plans: the strike has no end date.
- On the Pacific coast (Colima, Jalisco), watch local civil protection and NHC updates through Thursday.
- US citizens can enroll in STEP; Canadians can use Registration of Canadians Abroad.
