BANGKOK, Thailand — October 29, 2026 — A China Airlines jet became stuck on a runway at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) on Wednesday evening when its main landing gear sank into the runway surface. The aircraft has since been moved, and the airport is back to normal operations on all three runways.
What happened
- When: About 7:20pm Bangkok time on Wednesday, October 28.
- Where: Near the start of runway 02R.
- Aircraft: A China Airlines Boeing 737-800 operating flight CI840 from Bangkok to Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Its main landing gear sank into the runway surface as it prepared to take off, and the aircraft could not move.
- Aftermath: Airport staff inspected the scene and arranged for the aircraft to be removed. It was later towed to parking stand 502 for inspection.
- Status: Normal operations have resumed on all three runways.
- Not yet published: how long 02R was closed, the cause, and what happened to flight CI840 (TBA).
What it means for non-revs
- No lasting impact reported. All three runways are open again, so flying through BKK should be normal.
- China Airlines Bangkok–Kaohsiung riders: if you were planning to ride this service in the next day or two, check its status before you list, since the aircraft was pulled for inspection and the fate of Wednesday’s flight was not reported.
- Keep an eye on runway notices. The airport has not announced any further work on 02R, but check for updates if you are flying through BKK in the coming days.
