BANGKOK, Thailand — November 1, 2026 — From today, security staff at Bangkok’s Don Mueang International Airport (DMK) no longer sweep passengers with handheld metal detectors. Instead, anyone who needs a second check after the walk-through metal detector or body scanner gets a hands-on pat-down. The airport warns that screening may take a little longer at busy times.
What is changing
- Start date: November 1, 2026. End date: none announced; this is a standing change to the screening procedure.
- What goes: handheld metal detector (HHMD) wands.
- What replaces them: a manual pat-down, carried out after the passenger goes through the walk-through metal detector (WTMD) or body scanner.
- Why: the airport says it is tightening security in line with Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) Regulation No. 113 and ICAO recommendations. CAAT standards list walk-through detectors, body scanners and pat-downs as approved screening methods. No specific incident was cited.
- Which checkpoints: the announcement does not say whether this covers domestic, international or both: TBA.
- The airport says searches will follow its standard procedures and respect passengers’ rights and privacy.
What passengers are asked to do
- Arrive with enough time before departure. The airport says screening may be “slightly longer, particularly during busy periods.”
- Take off belts, watches, jewelry and other metal items and get phones and jackets ready while waiting in line.
- Tell security staff before screening about any injury, implanted medical device (such as a pacemaker) or pregnancy.

Indonesian outlet GEBRAK.ID also reports that in mid-October 2026, Thai aviation authorities allowed officers to open checked bags without the owner present when the X-ray flags something suspicious. That report does not tie the measure to any one airport.

What it means for non-revs
- Build in extra security time at DMK. Pat-downs take longer than a wand sweep, and the airport itself expects slower lines at peak times. Do not cut it close to boarding, especially when standby passengers are processed late at the gate.
- Clear your pockets before the belt. Fewer alarms at the walk-through detector means fewer pat-downs and a faster trip through.
- Speak up early if you have a medical implant, injury or are pregnant, so staff can plan the right screening.
- Pack checked bags so they are easy to inspect, and keep valuables and anything fragile in your carry-on, since Thai officers may now open a flagged checked bag without you there.
- Suvarnabhumi is not affected as far as has been announced, so if you are choosing between Bangkok’s two airports, this change applies only to DMK.
