November 2, 2026 — Ryanair (FR) will impose temporary pay freezes, lean harder on artificial intelligence in its back office and fly with fewer cabin crew on some flights, as it braces for a roughly €2 billion jump in its fuel bill next year. The airline also warned that fares will rise sharply once its fuel hedges run out.

Airline: Ryanair (FR) · Country: Ireland

What happened

Ryanair set out the cost drive alongside results for the first half of its 2027 financial year, reported on November 2. The carrier blamed elevated jet-fuel prices tied to the Middle East conflict and the disruption around the Strait of Hormuz, and said prices could stay high well into 2027 unless the conflict is resolved quickly.

  • Pay freezes: temporary freezes for work groups whose labour agreements have not already locked in pay rises. Which groups, and for how long, was not specified (TBA).
  • AI and head office: more AI in back-office functions, which Ryanair said could mean fewer jobs at its Dublin headquarters. No figure was given (TBA).
  • Cabin crew ratios: lower crewing ratios on some flights, but only within legal minimum crewing rules. Ryanair said there is limited room to do this and it will keep more than the minimum on busy flights.
  • Fares: Ryanair said airfares “will increase materially” once its hedged fuel is used up. It has hedged 80% of its fuel through March 2027.
First half, FY2027 Result
Passengers 125.8 million (up 6%)
Average load factor 95%
Average fare €55.70 (down from €58)
Operating costs €7.69 billion (up 10%)
Profit after tax €2.15 billion (down 15%)

Ryanair said it has already trimmed growth plans to avoid flying on unhedged fuel, and pointed to capacity cuts by competitors. CEO Michael O’Leary warned that loss-making airlines face a difficult winter. No union response had been reported at the time of writing.

What it means for non-revs

  • Full planes. A 95% average load factor leaves very little room for standby or ZED travellers on Ryanair. With growth trimmed this winter, expect that to stay tight; buy a cheap ticket rather than gamble on an open seat.
  • Labour watch. Pay freezes for groups without locked-in raises could stir union pushback at some Ryanair bases. No strike action has been announced, but keep an eye on local union statements before planning travel that relies on Ryanair or its competitors.
  • Wider squeeze. O’Leary’s warning and the reference to rival capacity cuts point to fewer seats across European short-haul this winter, which tightens standby options on other carriers too.
  • For Ryanair crews: lower crewing ratios are limited by legal minimums, and the pay-freeze details have not been published. Check with your union rep or base management for how they apply to your contract.
