November 2, 2026 — United Airlines (UA) is reported to want as many as 20 daily slot pairs at New York JFK for its planned 2027 return to the airport. Separately, a United Boeing 757 crew called a fuel Mayday at San Francisco on October 30 after a go-around, although the airline says no emergency was declared.

What happened
JFK comeback
United plans to return to JFK in 2027 with frequent premium flights to Los Angeles (LAX) and San Francisco (SFO). Chief Commercial Officer Andrew Nocella has reaffirmed the 2027 timing. The final slot count and schedule are not set (TBA).
United’s “Blue Sky” partnership with JetBlue would give it access to up to seven daily round trips at JFK, potentially from 2027. Aviation A2Z reports United wants up to 20 daily slot pairs, so it would need to find more, possibly by buying slots from other carriers, which may come at less attractive times. The partnership also includes reciprocal loyalty benefits. Aviation A2Z said United “no longer appears interested” in a merger with JetBlue.
United last flew from JFK in 2021–2022 with Boeing 767-300ERs, and before that ran premium “p.s.” transcontinental flights there until late 2015, when it consolidated in New York at Newark. CEO Scott Kirby has called leaving JFK one of the airline’s major strategic mistakes.
Fuel Mayday at San Francisco
On the morning of Friday, October 30, United flight UA1023 from Boston to San Francisco, a Boeing 757-200 (N19117) with 91 passengers and 6 crew, went around at about 75 feet on approach to Runway 28R at 11:11 a.m. local time. The pilot later cited an unstable approach. Air traffic control had warned of wake turbulence from a Boeing 787 ahead and a 5-knot tailwind.
The crew then radioed a fuel Mayday, reporting 5,200 lbs of fuel remaining, and landed safely on 28R at 11:24 a.m. No injuries were reported. A United spokesperson told Simple Flying the crew did not declare an emergency, although the Mayday call can be heard on the air traffic control audio. Any FAA or NTSB follow-up has not been announced (TBA).
What it means for non-revs
- No JFK option yet. Nothing changes before 2027. When United returns, new JFK–LAX and JFK–SFO flights would add premium-focused seats on routes where American, Delta and JetBlue already compete, but the schedule and slot count are still TBA.
- Newark stays the New York hub. For now, keep listing through Newark for United New York travel.
- JetBlue partnership. Reports on the Blue Sky deal mention reciprocal loyalty benefits but say nothing about employee pass travel. Check with your pass bureau before assuming any reciprocal travel between the two airlines.
- For crews: the San Francisco event follows another United fuel-related emergency on October 25 (flight 1854, Grand Cayman–Houston). Fuel planning is likely to stay under scrutiny.
