November 3, 2026 — AirAsia (AK) has appointed a seven-member board for its new Bahrain operation and is aiming to start passenger flights there by March 2027, subject to regional conditions.
Airline: AirAsia (AK) · Country: Malaysia (new base in Bahrain)
What happened
The appointments were announced on November 1. All seven directors are non-executive. Dr. Serra Kirdar is chair and Dato’ Fam Lee Ee is vice chairman. The other members are Dr. Faisal Khalid Kanoo, Nawaf Al Zayani, Akram Safa, Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon and Tan Sri Jamaludin Ibrahim.
Parent company Capital A signed a strategic agreement with Bahrain’s Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications in November 2025, and AirAsia named Bahrain its regional hub in February 2026. Capital A CEO Tony Fernandes said the commitment is unchanged even though events in the region forced a change to the timetable. AirAsia is still watching conditions before finalising its passenger schedule.

What it means for non-revs
- Possible new interline option, later. A Bahrain base would put AirAsia between Southeast Asia, the Gulf and Europe. Whether it will offer any staff-travel or ZED agreements is not known; check with your pass bureau once flights launch.
- Jobs: The board chair said the venture should create jobs for Bahrainis. Hiring details are TBA.
- No change now. Routes, aircraft and dates are not final, so there is nothing to book or list on yet.
