October 1, 2026 — A national strike across several sectors will disrupt Italian trains and ferries on Friday, October 2. Italy’s official strike calendar also gained new dates this week, including a 24-hour air traffic control strike at Milan Malpensa on November 22.

Friday, October 2: national strike

  • Who is striking: the CSLE union called the strike, and the FI-SI union has joined it.
  • Trains: Trenitalia, Italo and Trenord rail services are affected from 11:00 to 14:00 only.
  • Ferries: maritime services, including ferries, are also part of the strike.
  • Guaranteed trains: Trenitalia publishes a list of trains that will run during the strike. When the news reports were published, Italo had not released a list.
  • Milan area (Trenord): trains that leave by 10:00 and arrive by 11:00 will run normally. Replacement buses will run between Milano Cadorna and Malpensa Airport, and between Stabio and Malpensa.

New dates added to the calendar on September 30

  • Milan Malpensa air traffic control: the FAST-CONFSAL union called a strike of ENAV controllers at Malpensa for November 22, 00:01–24:00.
  • Earlier notice: a national ENAV air traffic control strike was already set for November 21, 13:00–17:00.

What it means for airline travelers

  • Arriving at Malpensa on Friday: plan to catch a train that leaves before 10:00 or after 14:00. Otherwise, use the replacement buses from Cadorna, or a coach or taxi. Trains scheduled between 11:00 and 14:00 may be cancelled.
  • Ferry trips Friday: if you are taking a ferry (for example, to the islands), confirm the sailing with the operator before you go.
  • Air traffic control strikes on November 21–22: these can cause cancellations, and standby seats get scarce when airlines consolidate flights. If you can, avoid flying in or out of Malpensa on November 22 on standby. Allow buffer days around both dates.
  • Florence and Pisa on October 16: check your flights to and from these airports for possible disruption.
  • Refunds and changes: Trenitalia and Italo usually offer refunds or changes for trains cancelled by strikes. Check each operator’s strike page.
  • Check the official calendar (scioperi.mit.gov.it) the day before you travel, because strikes can be added or called off at short notice.
