October 1, 2026 — Government workers at the federal, state and local levels across Nigeria plan a three-day nationwide “warning strike” from Friday, October 2 to Sunday, October 4. Public services could be disrupted.
The details
- Who called it: the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council (JNPSNC). Unions taking part include NCSU, ASCSN, the nurses’ union NANNM and AUPCTRE.
- Who it covers: workers in government ministries, departments and agencies, according to Vanguard. The Nigeria Labour Congress has signaled tacit support.
- What they want:
- Petrol cut to N500 per litre.
- Payment of a wage award.
- Talks on the 2027 minimum wage.
- What set it off: the President’s October 1 Independence Day speech.
- Airports and transport: reports do not say whether aviation or transport staff will join. That is TBA.
What it means for airline travelers
- Public offices may be closed or short-staffed. That could include offices that handle passports or permits. Leave yourself slack if you need anything from a government office this week.
- Public hospitals may have reduced services, because the nurses’ union is part of the action. Travel insurance that covers private care is worth having.
- Check your flight before going to the airport. It isn’t yet known whether airport-related government agencies are taking part. Leave extra time.
- Avoid crowds. Steer clear of rallies and protests, and register with STEP (US) or Registration of Canadians Abroad.
