Early October is peak festival season across North America: balloons over the desert, fried everything in Dallas, jets over San Francisco Bay and fiddles on Cape Breton. Here are six events running in the next two weeks, with the nearest airport and how to get from the terminal to the fun.
1. Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta — Albuquerque, New Mexico
When: October 3–11, 2026
The world’s largest hot-air balloon event, with more than 500 balloons lifting off in dawn mass ascensions and glowing on the field after dark. Unlike most events of this size, you walk right among the balloons as they inflate.
Nearest airport: Albuquerque International Sunport (ABQ), about 12–14 miles south of Balloon Fiesta Park.
Getting there: There is no direct transit from the airport. Take a rideshare or rental car to one of the official Park & Ride lots (Cottonwood Mall, Coronado Center, Hoffmantown Church, or Intel in Rio Rancho on weekends) and ride the bus in. Buses for morning sessions leave around 4:00 and 5:30 a.m. Driving direct takes 20–25 minutes without traffic and far longer on event mornings.
Good to know: Admission is sold per session (about $22; kids 12 and under free). Park & Ride does not run Monday–Wednesday, and there are no evening sessions Monday–Wednesday or on the final Sunday. Flying is weather-dependent.

2. State Fair of Texas — Dallas, Texas
When: September 25 – October 18, 2026
One of the biggest and longest-running state fairs in the country, set in Art Deco Fair Park. Come for Big Tex, the inventive fried food, the auto show, the Midway and free main-stage concerts included with admission.
Nearest airport: Dallas Love Field (DAL), about 8 miles away. Dallas Fort Worth International (DFW) is about 22 miles.
Getting there: DART’s Green Line stops at the front gate (Fair Park Station) and at MLK Jr. Station by the Cotton Bowl. From DFW, ride the Orange Line and change to the Green Line at Bachman Station. From Love Field, take the DART shuttle bus to Inwood/Love Field Station and board the Green Line. Rideshare runs roughly 15–20 minutes from DAL and 30–40 from DFW. DART’s State Fair page has current routings.
Good to know: Open 10 a.m.–9 p.m. Sunday–Thursday and until 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Official parking is $25, so the train is the easy call.

3. Festival Internacional Cervantino — Guanajuato, Mexico
When: October 3–18, 2026
Latin America’s leading performing-arts festival, now in its 54th edition with France as guest country. More than 200 performances of music, theatre, dance and opera fill the theatres, plazas and alleys of a UNESCO-listed colonial city, and much of the street programming is free.
Nearest airport: Del Bajío / Guanajuato International (BJX) near Silao, about 19 miles (30 km) from the historic centre.
Getting there: Authorised airport taxi or Uber, about 30–40 minutes; there is no direct public bus from the terminal. The centre is largely pedestrian, so expect a drop-off and a walk. Alternates: Querétaro (QRO), about two hours by road, or Mexico City (MEX) and a first-class bus (Primera Plus or ETN) of roughly 4.5–5 hours.
Good to know: Theatre and headline shows are ticketed through Ticketmaster Mexico. Hotels in the centre fill up, especially on weekends.

4. San Francisco Fleet Week — San Francisco, California
When: October 4–12, 2026 (air show October 9–11, noon–4 p.m.)
A waterfront air show headlined by the U.S. Navy Blue Angels, flown between the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz. This year’s lineup also lists a United 777 demonstration, the F-22 Raptor and the F-35B, plus a Parade of Ships and ship tours.
Nearest airport: San Francisco International (SFO), about 15 miles from Marina Green. Oakland (OAK) also works.
Getting there: BART from SFO to downtown (Montgomery or Embarcadero, about 30 minutes), then Muni toward the Marina or Fisherman’s Wharf, or walk the waterfront. Rideshare takes 30–45 minutes, and streets near the Marina are congested on show days.
Good to know: General viewing, Fleet Fest and ship tours are free; premium seating is optional. Fog can delay or cancel flying.

5. Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest — Kitchener and Waterloo, Ontario
When: Runs into mid-October; the big weekend is October 9–12, 2026
Canada’s largest Bavarian festival, widely billed as the biggest Oktoberfest outside Germany. Ticketed festhallen at the local German clubs are joined by Willkommen Platz, a free Bavarian village downtown (October 9–11), and the Thanksgiving Day Parade on Monday, October 12 at 9:30 a.m.
Nearest airport: Region of Waterloo International (YKF), about 10 km from downtown Kitchener, with limited service. Toronto Pearson (YYZ) is the main gateway, about 95 km away.
Getting there: From YKF, taxi or rideshare takes 15–20 minutes. From Toronto, drive about 1 to 1.25 hours, or use GO Transit’s Kitchener Line to Kitchener station downtown.
Good to know: The festival’s own pages give different overall start and end dates, so check the event calendar for the day you plan to go. Festhallen need tickets and do not run every day.

6. Celtic Colours International Festival — Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia
When: October 9–17, 2026
Nine days of Celtic music at the height of fall colour: 52 concerts in 36 communities, in venues from parish halls to arenas. The 30th festival opens in Port Hawkesbury and closes in Sydney, and pairs naturally with a drive around the Cabot Trail.
Nearest airport: J.A. Douglas McCurdy Sydney Airport (YQY), 10–15 minutes from Sydney. Halifax Stanfield (YHZ) has far more service.
Getting there: Rent a car. Concerts are spread across the island, up to two hours apart, with no useful public transit. From Halifax it is about three hours’ drive to Port Hawkesbury and four-plus to Sydney.
Good to know: Each concert is ticketed separately, and island accommodation is limited in October.
