October 3, 2026 — Update to our October 2 story. A second storm system hit Crete on Friday, October 2, flooding parts of Heraklion and the north coast. Authorities sent an island-wide phone alert telling people to limit movement until Saturday afternoon. Heavy rain is forecast through Sunday.
What changed
- Areas flooded: Heraklion districts including the city centre, Hersonissos, Gouves, the Lasithi Plateau and, for a second day, Zoniana.
- Emergency: the municipality of Mylopotamos is under a civil-protection state of emergency from October 1 to December 30.
- Ferries: Friday-evening sailings from Piraeus, Rafina and Lavrio were cancelled or held. Gales of force 8 to 10 are forecast in the Aegean.
- Roads: several roads and bridges are closed in Heraklion and Mylopotamos. A bridge at Livadia was swept away on Thursday, injuring two people.
- Airports: no closure was reported at Heraklion or Chania.
- Forecast: strongest on Saturday evening in northern and mountain areas, easing from midday Sunday.
- Deaths: unchanged at one.
What it means for airline travelers
- Ferries: check with your ferry company before going to the port. Sailings resume only when the coast guard lifts the ban.
- Driving on Crete: avoid mountain roads and river crossings until the rain ends. Ask your rental company about closed routes.
- Flights: airports are open, but allow extra time to reach them.
- Standby travelers: cancelled ferries push island travelers onto flights. Expect fuller loads out of Heraklion and Chania this weekend.
- Hiking: check locally before planning any gorge walk.
