October 3, 2026 — Hawaiian Airlines (HA) now requires Neighbor Island passengers to check in and drop bags at least 50 minutes before departure, up from 30. The change took effect today, the same day Alaska-branded Boeing 737-800s began flying between Honolulu and Kahului.
What happened
Three changes took effect together on Saturday, October 3, across Hawaiian and its parent Alaska Airlines (AS).
A longer cutoff. The minimum check-in and bag-drop time for all Neighbor Island flights is now 50 minutes before departure. It was 30. Passengers are asked to check in online or in the Alaska Hawaiian app. Shelly Parker, who runs Hawaii guest operations for both airlines, told Hawaii News Now the extra time is needed because “their bags have to go through TSA.”
737s between the islands. Alaska-branded 737-800s now fly three daily round trips between Honolulu (HNL) and Kahului (OGG). They add seats and cargo space on top of Hawaiian’s Boeing 717 schedule, which still covers about 140 Neighbor Island flights a day. Hawaiian plans to retire the 717s by 2028 and replace them with Hawaiian-branded 737s.
A new international lobby at Honolulu. Check-in and bag drop for every Hawaiian international departure has moved from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2, Lobby 4. Hawaii News Now lists the affected flights as those to Sydney, the Cook Islands, Tahiti, American Samoa and Japan. Neighbor Island flights stay in Terminal 1.
Where to go from October 3
| Flight | Check-in location | Cutoff |
|---|---|---|
| Neighbor Island from Honolulu (717 and 737) | Terminal 1, Lobby 3, self-service bag-tag stations | 50 minutes |
| 737 flights from Kahului to Honolulu | Alaska counters, next to Hawaiian’s | 50 minutes |
| Hawaiian international from Honolulu | Terminal 2, Lobby 4 | Not changed in this announcement |
Hawaiian says about 98% of its passengers already check in on the app well ahead of the deadline.
What it means for non-revs
- Be checked in 50 minutes out, not 30. The old habit of rolling up half an hour before an interisland hop no longer works. The airlines have not published a separate standby cutoff, so treat 50 minutes as the minimum and confirm in your own travel portal.
- Watch short interisland connections. If you are checking a bag or re-checking between tickets, a turn that worked last week may now miss the bag-drop deadline. Carry-on only is the safer way to standby-hop.
- Honolulu–Kahului has more seats. Three extra 737-800 round trips a day add capacity on the busiest Neighbor Island route. That should help standby odds, though the airline has not published seat counts or loads.
- Know which counter at Kahului. The 737 flights check in at the Alaska counters, not Hawaiian’s. Check the aircraft type on your listing before you queue.
- International non-revs at HNL: go to Terminal 2, Lobby 4. Turning up at Terminal 1 costs you a walk you may not have time for.
