BANGKOK, October 4, 2026 — Update to our October 1, 2 and 3 coverage. Thai Airways says 1,092 delayed bags were still waiting at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) late on Saturday, down from more than 10,000 at the peak. The airline expects to hand the last of them back today, Sunday, October 4. Whether it met that target had not been confirmed when we published.
What changed since yesterday
- A firm count. Yesterday the remaining total was TBA. The airline’s 10:00 p.m. update on Saturday, October 3, put it at 1,092 bags.
- A new target date from the airline. Thai Airways now says the backlog will be cleared on Sunday, October 4. The Transport Ministry’s earlier October 2 deadline was missed.
- Confirmation that the backlog is cleared: TBA.
- Delayed-baggage forms. Passengers still waiting are asked to fill in a delayed-baggage form so the airline can trace the bag and arrange delivery, or to contact the Lost and Found centre at Suvarnabhumi.
- Temporary ticket office. The Thaiger reports Thai Airways opened one at its head office on Vibhavadi Rangsit Road on October 3 and 4, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., to help affected passengers.
- Relief options. The Nation says the airline has published three flood relief options for Bangkok flights dated September 26 to October 11. We could not open the details today, so check with Thai Airways. Terms: TBA.
- CEO status. Today’s reports describe chief executive Chai Eamsiri as suspended on October 2, with director Samrit Samniang acting in the role. Yesterday we wrote that the board had removed him.
The backlog in numbers
| Date | Bags still waiting |
|---|---|
| September 26–29 | More than 10,000 build up |
| September 30 | About 8,000 (about 1,800 returned) |
| October 2 | About 5,600, per The Thaiger |
| October 3, 10:00 p.m. | 1,092 |
| October 4 | Airline target: zero. Confirmation TBA |
The military contingent helping on the ramp now stands at 131 people: 100 from the Royal Thai Air Force and 31 from the Royal Thai Army.
What it means for non-revs
- Checked bags on Thai Airways through BKK are close to normal risk again, but not there yet. Until the airline confirms the backlog is gone, carry on if you can.
- Still missing a bag? File the delayed-baggage form now. Without it the airline cannot match the bag to you. Yesterday’s story has the pickup steps for the 24-hour collection hub at the THAI Ground Service Maintenance building.
- Standby on Thai Airways should keep improving. The airline said it was back to a full schedule from October 3, so the pool of displaced passengers is shrinking. Check loads close to departure.
- Travelled between September 26 and October 11? Ask Thai Airways about its flood relief options, and check your own airline’s pass rules on whether non-rev tickets qualify.
- Leave a longer connection if you are transferring with a checked bag at BKK this week.
