October 4, 2026 — Protests demanding the resignation of India’s chief election commissioner intensified in central New Delhi on Sunday. About 5,000 police and paramilitary personnel are deployed around Jantar Mantar, India Gate and Ashoka Road, and more protests are set for this week.

The details

  • Where: Jantar Mantar, India Gate and Ashoka Road, in the government and tourist heart of the capital. Protests were also reported in Mumbai.
  • Policing: the Rapid Action Force is deployed. A police bus window was smashed on Sunday.
  • Detentions: more than 500 on Friday and more than 150 on Saturday, with more on Sunday.
  • Next dates: a Supreme Court hearing on Monday, October 5, and a joint opposition protest outside the Delhi election office on Wednesday, October 7.
  • Transport: no airport disruption is reported. We could not verify any metro station closures.

What it means for airline travelers

  • Layover sightseeing: skip India Gate and the Jantar Mantar area this week, especially October 5 and 7.
  • Hotels near Connaught Place: expect road diversions. Allow extra time to reach the airport.
  • Stay clear of crowds. Two of Sunday’s marches had no police permission, and police have detained hundreds of people.
