October 4, 2026 — United Airlines (UA, United States) has told its roughly 30,000 flight attendants not to use standby travel benefits while out sick, and warned that doing so could lead to discipline. Their union says the contract contains no such ban.
What happened
Paddle Your Own Kanoo and InsideFlyer both reported on October 4 that United sent flight attendants an internal memo on pass travel during sick leave. The memo’s core line, as quoted by Paddle Your Own Kanoo: “If you are too sick to work, you are too sick for leisure travel.”
According to those reports, the memo tells crew to get a manager’s approval before flying on a pass while on a sick call. A manager can say no, and can look into whether the sick call was made to free up time for a trip. The date the memo went out has not been published (TBA).
The Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA), which represents United’s flight attendants, disagrees with that reading. In a “Pass Travel Reminder” posted on its United site on September 24, 2026, the union says the company’s general rule does not apply to flight attendants. Its position is that they are not barred from traveling while on sick leave and do not need a supervisor’s permission first.
The union does not call it a free pass. It says flight attendants are held to a “heightened level of accountability” when they travel while on the sick list.
Where the two sides stand
| Question | United (per the reported memo) | AFA |
|---|---|---|
| Can a flight attendant non-rev while on a sick call? | No leisure travel if too sick to work | Yes. The contract does not prohibit it |
| Is manager approval needed? | Ask first; a manager may refuse | Not required |
| What is the risk? | Investigation and possible discipline | Be ready to show the sick call was genuine and the trip did not slow recovery |
| Effective date of the memo | TBA | Union reminder dated September 24, 2026 |
Why it is coming up now
United has been tightening up on sick leave for some time. The reports say the airline uses software to match sick calls against time-off requests that were turned down. Paddle Your Own Kanoo cites the union as warning that perceived sick leave abuse is now the most common reason for flight attendant termination cases.
United and AFA finalized a new flight attendant contract earlier in 2026. Both reports note that the company did not write a sick-leave travel ban into that agreement.
Also in the union’s reminder: confirmed seats and standby
The same September 24 AFA notice covers a separate pass rule. A flight attendant who holds a confirmed booking may cancel it and list as non-revenue space-available (NRSA) for the same date and itinerary only in limited cases. The conditions the union lists are a confirmed booking made at least seven days before departure, and a cancellation within 24 hours of making the booking. Read the union’s notice for the exact wording before relying on it.
What it means for non-revs
- United flight attendants: the union says you may travel while on a sick call, but expect questions. If a trip overlaps a sick call, keep documentation and be able to explain why the travel did not affect your recovery. Sick calls that follow a denied day-off request are the ones reported to draw attention.
- If you ask a manager and are told no, InsideFlyer reports you are expected to follow that answer. Talk to your AFA representative before you ask, not after.
- Pass riders and buddies are tied to the employee. Pass privileges belong to the employee’s record. An investigation into the employee can put everyone’s travel on that account at risk. Parents, partners and companions should not push a crew member to travel on a sick day.
- Other work groups at United: the union says the company’s standard rule is the “too sick to work” line. That is the policy to assume applies to you unless your own contract says otherwise.
- Other airlines: this is not only a United issue. Earlier this year AFA’s Endeavor Air chapter warned members of a rise in investigations tied to pass travel during leave. If you are on sick or medical leave anywhere, check your carrier’s pass policy before you list.
- Standby odds: no schedule or capacity change comes with this, so loads are not affected.
