BARCELONA, October 5, 2026 — Update to our October 4 story. The storm that cancelled 385 flights at Barcelona–El Prat Airport (BCN) over the weekend cost the airport more flights on Monday. At least 29 were cancelled by midday, taking the three-day total past 400, and Flightradar24 rated El Prat the most disrupted airport in the world. Rain is forecast most of the week.
What changed since yesterday
- Monday cancellations: 29 flights by 12:00 noon on October 5, according to Protección Civil figures reported by Infobae. Flightradar24 showed a higher count of 54 (33 arrivals and 21 departures).
- Monday delays: about 120 departures delayed, with an average delay of about 70 minutes.
- Running total: at least 414 cancellations since Saturday.
- Vueling waiver widened: the airline’s special measures now cover October 3 to 5. Affected passengers can change free of charge to a flight in the next seven days, or take a refund as flight credit. Yesterday the offer was a change within two days.
- Airport train is back: the Rodalies R2 Sud line, which serves the airport, was running its full route on Monday.
- Forecast extended: yesterday’s outlook ran to Wednesday, October 7. Today’s forecast shows rain through Thursday, October 8.
| Day | Cancelled at BCN | Delayed at BCN |
|---|---|---|
| Saturday, October 3 | 220 | 510 |
| Sunday, October 4 | 165 | 297 |
| Monday, October 5 (to noon) | 29 | About 120 departures |
| Total so far | At least 414 | Full-day Monday figure TBA |
Getting to and from the airport
- R2 Sud (airport line): running normally on Monday.
- R2 Nord: trains run between Granollers Centre, the airport and Castelldefels. Buses replace trains between Granollers Centre and Sant Celoni.
- Other Rodalies lines: several were still cut or part-replaced by buses after landslides and flooded tunnels. Each section needs repairs and a test run with an empty train before it reopens.
- Full Rodalies recovery: TBA. Officials said it will not be immediate.
What comes next
- Monday: Spain’s weather agency AEMET kept a low-level rain warning for the Barcelona coast from 5:00 a.m. to 7:59 p.m., for up to 20 mm of rain in an hour.
- Tuesday to Thursday, October 6 to 8: local forecast site El Pespunte shows an 85% to 100% chance of rain each day.
- Friday, October 9: about a 50% chance.
- Saturday, October 10: clearing, with about a 10% chance of rain.
- Palma de Mallorca (PMI): local paper Última Hora reported three cancellations by early Monday afternoon and delays linked to storms in Spanish airspace.
- Return to a normal schedule at BCN: TBA.
What it means for non-revs
- Standby out of Barcelona stays very tight, now into next week. Passengers from more than 400 cancelled flights are being rebooked ahead of you. Vueling’s seven-day change window means displaced passengers can take seats on flights through about October 12.
- More cancellations are possible through Thursday. If your trip is flexible, the weekend of October 10 looks like the first calm window.
- The train to the airport works again from central Barcelona. Coming from north of the city, check for bus replacements and allow extra time.
- Check flight status before leaving for the airport, and check loads again at the last minute. Monday’s cancellations came on a day with only a low-level warning.
- Carry on. Three days of cancellations make checked bags hard to trace.
- Connecting through Palma or Ibiza? The same storms are slowing traffic there, so leave a longer connection.
