October 5, 2026 — India’s largest airline, IndiGo (6E), will raise the fuel charge it adds to every ticket for bookings made from October 6, 2026, blaming a jump of more than 14% in jet fuel prices in a single month.

What happened

IndiGo announced revised fuel charges on October 5. They apply to new bookings made from 12:01 a.m. on October 6, 2026. Tickets already issued are not affected by the announcement.

The airline said aviation turbine fuel is among the most expensive it has been in a decade, and tied the rise partly to instability in the Middle East. It called the change a “measured and relatively modest adjustment.”

Onmanorama reports the domestic charge rises by ₹100 to ₹350 depending on distance. It is the second increase since IndiGo introduced the charge in March 2026; the first came in April.

New fuel charge per sector

Route type Band Fuel charge from October 6
Domestic Up to 500 km ₹375
Domestic 501–1,000 km ₹600
Domestic 1,001–1,500 km ₹900
Domestic 1,501–2,000 km ₹1,150
Domestic Over 2,000 km ₹1,300
International SAARC, up to 500 km ₹1,000
International SAARC, over 500 km ₹3,000
International Southeast Asia, Gulf and Middle East, North and East Asia ₹5,500
International Africa ₹6,000
International Europe ₹10,000

The Statesman and Onmanorama list Europe at ₹10,000. Telangana Today groups Africa and Europe together at ₹6,000, so check the amount at booking. End date for the charge: TBA.

What it means for non-revs

  • Check your ZED or ID ticket price before you list. Carrier-imposed fuel charges are often collected on top of the base staff fare. Whether IndiGo applies this charge to interline and industry-discount tickets is not stated in the announcement, so confirm through your airline’s staff travel desk or myIDTravel.
  • Book before midnight if you were about to. The new amounts apply to bookings from 12:01 a.m. on October 6. Tickets issued before then keep the old charge.
  • Long international sectors cost the most. A Europe sector carries up to ₹10,000, against ₹375 on a short domestic hop.
  • Loads are unlikely to move much. A surcharge of this size is small against a typical fare. Do not expect emptier flights on IndiGo’s busy metro routes because of it.
  • Watch other carriers. Today’s reports do not mention matching moves by other Indian airlines. Fuel is a shared cost, so recheck prices on any Indian carrier you plan to use.
