October 6, 2026 — Update to our October 5 story. Three typhoons are active near Japan at the same time. None is forecast to hit the mainland, but high waves have cancelled ferries to the Izu Islands, and a new storm may approach the Ogasawara Islands over the holiday weekend.
The three storms
| Typhoon | Where it is | Outlook |
|---|---|---|
| No. 27 Choi-wan | East of Honshu, moving north-northeast | Weakening and moving away; no landfall forecast |
| No. 28 Nolo | Far to the east, northeast of Wake Island, moving west | Forecast to turn north over open ocean east of Japan around October 9–11 |
| No. 29 Koguma | North of Kwajalein in the Marshall Islands | Strengthening; may approach the Ogasawara Islands over the holiday weekend |
What changed
- Choi-wan has left the Ogasawara Islands. Weathernews put it at 950 hPa on October 6, down from the 925 hPa we reported yesterday. The Japan Meteorological Agency’s forecast keeps it well offshore.
- The two newer storms now have names. Nolo is a former Pacific hurricane that crossed the Date Line. Koguma formed near the Marshall Islands on October 5.
- Waves: The Japan Weather Association forecast 6-metre waves for the Kanto coast and Izu Islands and 7 metres for Ogasawara on October 6.
- Ferries: Tokai Kisen cancelled all high-speed jet ferry sailings from Tokyo to Oshima, Toshima, Niijima, Shikinejima and Kozushima for the whole of October 6. Evening large-ship sailings to Miyakejima, Mikurajima and Hachijojima were under review.
- Koguma’s track is uncertain. Weathernews expects it to reach “strong” status by Friday, October 9. Rough weather for the Izu Islands is possible early next week, depending on its path.
What it means for airline travelers
- Mainland travel is normal. We found no Shinkansen suspensions and no nationwide flight cancellations, and no threat to Tokyo, Honshu or Okinawa.
- Island trips are the risk. If you are heading to the Izu or Ogasawara Islands between October 9 and 13, watch Koguma and check with the ferry operator before you go.
- Getting stranded: Ferries to these islands are infrequent, so a cancellation can add days. Do not plan a standby flight home right after an island return.
- Stay off Pacific beaches and breakwaters on the Kanto and Izu coasts while the high-wave forecast lasts.
- Guam: No tropical cyclone watches or warnings were in effect when checked.
