October 6, 2026 — Update to our October 5 story. Barcelona’s airport rail link was running again on Tuesday morning, but about ten commuter lines in Catalonia remain cut or replaced by buses. A new orange rain alert covers Barcelona for Tuesday afternoon.
What changed
- Airport train: The R2 Nord line is operating between Barcelona Airport and Granollers Centre. Buses replace trains between Granollers Centre and Sant Celoni.
- Metro: El Nacional reported the metro running normally on Tuesday morning apart from some closed entrances. The airport line L9 Sud was not named, so check its status before relying on it.
- Still disrupted: About ten Rodalies lines, including R3, R4, R7, R8, R11 and RG1. The coastal R1 was being restored in stages.
- No dates: Track operator Adif is still inspecting the lines. Restoration dates are TBA.
- New alert: Catalonia’s weather service Meteocat issued an orange alert for Tuesday afternoon for the whole Catalan coast, Barcelona and Baix Llobregat, the district that includes the airport. It warns of up to 40 litres per square metre in 30 minutes.
- Next days: Yellow alerts follow on Wednesday. Thursday adds wind and sea warnings.
- Strikes: No Renfe or Adif strike was found.
Line status on Tuesday morning
| Line | Status |
|---|---|
| R2 Nord (airport) | Running Airport–Granollers Centre; buses to Sant Celoni |
| R1 (coast) | Partial service, being restored in stages |
| R3 | Trains only La Garriga–Ripoll |
| R4 | Buses Terrassa–Manresa |
| R7, R8, R11, RG1 | Cut or disrupted |
Status comes from morning press reports. Verify with Renfe before you travel.
What it means for airline travelers
- The ground is saturated, so fresh flooding and new rail cuts are possible with little warning. Check Rodalies and metro status before every trip to the airport.
- Keep a backup to the airport: the Aerobús or a taxi. Allow extra time on Tuesday evening and Wednesday.
- Flights: The storm cancelled about 250 flights at Barcelona on Saturday, October 3. If the rain returns at that strength, expect more cancellations and full flights afterward.
- Standby travelers should avoid tight same-day plans through Barcelona this week and consider Madrid as an alternative gateway.
- Day trips inland toward Manresa and Vic are affected by the R3 and R4 cuts.
