October 8, 2026 — Update to our October 7 story. Italy’s transport ministry calendar now shows a national rail strike from the evening of Friday, November 20, to the evening of Saturday, November 21. That Saturday already has a national air traffic control strike. For this Friday, the guaranteed hours for the Milan transit strike and the Romagna bus strike are confirmed.
New on the calendar
- National rail strike: From 9 pm Friday, November 20, to 8 pm Saturday, November 21. Called by the unions CUB Trasporti and SGB for staff at rail companies, passenger and freight. Local transit in some areas is also listed for November 21. Guaranteed trains are TBA.
- Same day as air traffic control: The national ENAV controllers’ strike on November 21 runs from 1 pm to 5 pm.
- Rome airports, December 14: A 24-hour strike at one ground handling company at Fiumicino and Ciampino.
- Emilia-Romagna station staff: The hours now read 9 pm Wednesday, October 28, to 9 pm Thursday, October 29. Yesterday we listed it as October 29.
- October 29–30 general strike: No change. Rail from 9 pm October 29 to 8:59 pm October 30. Whether flights, local transit and ferries are included is still TBA.
This Friday, October 9
- Milan (ATM): Two 24-hour strikes. Service is guaranteed from the start of service to 8:45 am and from 3 pm to 6 pm. Metro, trams and buses are at risk between 8:45 am and 3 pm and after 6 pm. These hours come from a travel site quoting ATM; we could not open ATM’s own notice.
- Recent turnout in Milan was low: About 7% and 15% in the two unions’ earlier strikes, the same site reports.
- Romagna buses (Start Romagna): 24 hours. Guaranteed in Rimini 6–9 am and 1–4 pm; in Ravenna 5:30–8:30 am and noon–3 pm; in Forlì-Cesena 5:30–8:30 am and 1–4 pm.
- Florence, Saturday October 10: The calendar shows the tramway only, for 24 hours. Guaranteed hours are TBA.

What it means for airline travelers
- Avoid Saturday, November 21, for standby travel in Italy. Trains to the airport and afternoon flights are both at risk.
- Milan on Friday: Travel before 8:45 am or between 3 pm and 6 pm. Outside those hours, plan a taxi to Linate or to the Malpensa train.
- Florence on Saturday: The tram is the usual link to the airport. Have a taxi or bus as a fallback.
- Rimini and Ravenna on Friday: Use the guaranteed hours for airport and station transfers.
- Refunds: Check Trenitalia’s and Italo’s strike pages once guaranteed-train lists are posted.
