PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla., Oct. 9, 2026 — Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport (ECP) has not announced a closure for Hurricane Isaias, but airlines have cancelled more than 60% of its Friday flights. With Pensacola and Destin-Fort Walton Beach both shut, it is the last Panhandle beach airport still open, and it has very few seats to offer.
What is happening
- Cancellations: FlightAware data cited by the Associated Press shows more than 60% of Friday, October 9 flights at ECP cancelled.
- Airport status: the airport’s most recent statement, dated Thursday, October 8, says it “remains open and fully operational.” No newer notice was on its website when we checked on Friday. Any closure time: TBA.
- Who decides: the airport says it is coordinating with airlines and emergency agencies, and that airline schedules can change quickly.
- The storm: Isaias is a Category 3 hurricane with 120 mph winds. Landfall is forecast late Friday between Mobile Bay, Alabama, and Choctawhatchee Bay, Florida, which is west of Panama City.
- Local risk: tropical storm warnings extend east to the Aucilla River, and a 5 to 7 foot storm surge is forecast as far east as Indian Pass. Tornadoes are possible overnight from Alabama into the Florida Panhandle.
- Neighbours: Destin-Fort Walton Beach (VPS) closed at 9 p.m. Thursday. Pensacola (PNS) closed at 10 a.m. Friday.
Airline waivers covering ECP
| Airline | Travel dates covered | Key terms |
|---|---|---|
| Delta | October 9–10 | Rebook and travel by October 13; tickets issued by October 7 |
| American | October 9–10 | All fare classes; tickets bought by October 6 |
| United | October 9–10 | Rebooking deadline: TBA |
| Southwest | Through October 10 | Rebook or fly standby within 14 days of the original date |
What it means for non-revs
- “Open” does not mean seats. Fewer than four in ten Friday flights are operating, and they are the only way out by air for the whole stretch of coast from Pensacola to Panama City.
- Standby chances on Friday are poor. Remaining flights are absorbing revenue passengers from ECP’s own cancellations and from closed VPS and PNS.
- Check the inbound aircraft. A departure can show as scheduled until the plane coming in is cancelled.
- ECP is the likeliest of the three to run a fuller schedule first, because it lies east of the forecast landfall zone and has not closed. That also makes it the airport every displaced passenger will try. Expect full flights through at least October 13, when Delta’s rebooking window ends.
- Watch for a late closure. The airport has not ruled one out. Check its website and your airline before driving.
