October 10, 2026 — Alaska Airlines has stopped giving customers a credit when the fare drops after they buy a ticket, View from the Wing reports. Travelers now have to cancel and rebook. Alaska has also begun selling some Breeze Airways flights under an interline agreement.

What happened

Fare drops. Until this week an Alaska agent could reprice an existing ticket at a lower fare and issue the difference as a credit. Agents have told customers that no longer happens. View from the Wing, which published on October 9, says the change was expected to take effect on October 7. Alaska has not announced it.

Before Now
Fare drops after purchase Agent reprices the ticket and issues a credit for the difference Cancel the ticket, take a Wallet credit, buy again at the lower fare
Companion Fare bookings Stayed in place Wallet funds may not pay for Companion Fare tickets under Alaska’s terms, so a new card payment may be needed
Paid seat upgrades Stayed in place Seat fee goes to Wallet, and Wallet cannot pay for main cabin seat upgrades
Effective date — Reported as October 7, 2026; not confirmed by Alaska

An unexpired Companion Fare code keeps its original expiry when a ticket is cancelled; an expired one is lost. Alaska still advertises no change fees on Main and First fares. Its published fare commitment says “we can’t apply price adjustments after purchase.”

One reader told View from the Wing his credit could not pay for his Companion Fare booking or his seat. After a second call, Alaska refunded him to his original card.

Breeze Airways interline

Alaska has started selling selected Breeze-operated flights touching Charleston, Las Vegas and Raleigh-Durham, mostly to cities Alaska does not serve. Cranky Flier confirmed the interline agreement with Alaska on October 6, according to Live and Let’s Fly. Neither airline has formally announced it.

  • It is an interline sale, not a codeshare. Searches found only standalone Breeze flights, not connections between the two airlines.
  • Atmos Rewards points are earned only when the Breeze flight is ticketed by Alaska.
  • There are no award redemptions on Breeze and no reciprocal elite benefits.

What it means for non-revs

  • Pass travel is not affected. The fare change applies to revenue tickets only.
  • It matters when you buy confirmed seats. Many airline families buy a revenue ticket as a backup or use a Companion Fare for a must-fly trip. A later fare drop now means cancelling and paying again, and your Wallet credit may not cover the new booking.
  • Do not assume Breeze is now a pass-travel partner. Nothing in the reports mentions a ZED or other staff travel agreement between Alaska and Breeze. Check your own carrier’s interline list before planning a trip on Breeze.
  • Loads are unchanged. Neither item adds or removes seats.
