October 10, 2026 — Kenya’s cabinet approved $350 million in shareholder financing for Kenya Airways on Friday, October 9. The money is meant for urgent bills, including maintenance to return grounded aircraft to service.

What happened

President William Ruto’s office announced the decision after Friday’s cabinet meeting. The Kenyan government is the airline’s largest shareholder.

Item Detail
New financing $350 million (KSh45.4 billion), paid in tranches under National Treasury oversight
Terms Repayable over up to 10 years; may convert to equity, subject to approvals
Use Urgent obligations, including aircraft maintenance and returning grounded planes to service
Existing state loans KSh122 billion (about $941 million) to convert into an equity-qualifying tradable instrument
First payment date TBA; corporate, shareholder and regulatory approvals are still needed

The airline is also looking for strategic investors, Reuters reports. None has been named.

Kenya Airways lost KSh16.1 billion after tax in the six months to June 30, 2026, up from KSh12.2 billion a year earlier, according to Pulse Kenya. Revenue rose 9% to KSh81 billion, but capacity fell 9% and jet fuel costs rose 32%. Spare parts delays have kept aircraft on the ground. One Boeing 787-8 returned to service in mid-July and a Boeing 777-300ER has been redelivered. The reports do not say how many aircraft remain grounded.

What it means for non-revs

  • The airline keeps flying. For anyone holding or planning interline standby travel on Kenya Airways, the financing lowers the near-term risk of sudden schedule cuts.
  • Seats stay tight for now. Capacity was down 9% in the first half with aircraft out of service. Check loads carefully on Nairobi long-haul routes.
  • More seats may follow. The money is earmarked for returning grounded aircraft, which would add capacity. No return dates have been given.
  • Kenya Airways staff: the reports say nothing about jobs or benefits. The approvals still to come, and any strategic investor, are the points to watch.
