SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 10, 2026 — The FAA held flights bound for San Francisco International Airport (SFO) on the ground on Friday, with delays averaging close to an hour, as the Fleet Week air show took over airspace above the bay. The air show flies again on Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

What happened

  • Ground delay program: the FAA’s airport status feed on Friday evening showed a ground delay program at SFO with an average delay of 57 minutes and a longest delay of 10 hours and 1 minute. The FAA listed the reason only as “other.”
  • The cause: Travel Tourister and Nomad Lawyer, both citing FAA and FlightAware data, attribute the program to airspace set aside for the air show, combined with heavy traffic.
  • How many flights: FlightAware counts carried by Nomad Lawyer show 303 delays and 5 cancellations at SFO on Friday. United was the most affected airline, Travel Tourister reports.
  • When it could repeat: NBC Bay Area’s schedule shows the air show opening at 12 p.m. Saturday, October 10, and 11:50 a.m. Sunday, October 11. The Blue Angels are due at 3 p.m. both days. Fleet Week runs through October 12.
  • Weekend delay programs: the FAA has not published plans for Saturday or Sunday. TBA.
  • Background: SFO reopened Runway 1R earlier this month after a six-month repaving closure, Aviation Week reports. Hourly arrival capacity had fallen from 54 to 36 during the work and an FAA approach rule change, and is expected to recover to 45–48.

What it means for non-revs

  • Avoid afternoon arrivals into SFO on Saturday and Sunday if you have a choice. A ground delay program holds SFO-bound flights at their origin, so the delay starts before you board.
  • Morning flights are the safer pick. Friday’s air show began at 12:15 p.m. and both weekend shows start around midday.
  • Protect your connections. A one-hour average delay breaks short connections at SFO. Misconnected revenue passengers then take the open seats on later flights.
  • Consider Oakland (OAK) or San Jose (SJC) for Bay Area trips this weekend, and check their status too.
  • Commuters into SFO: leave extra margin before report time on Saturday and Sunday afternoon.
  • Check before you leave home. Current FAA delay programs are posted at nasstatus.faa.gov.
