October 11, 2026 — KLM will cancel selected flights in advance from October 26, 2026 until early March 2027 because too many of its aircraft are stuck in maintenance. The airline has not said how many flights or which destinations are affected.

What happened

A KLM spokesperson told Dutch broadcaster NOS that fewer aircraft are available than the winter schedule needs. Aviation24.be, which reported the story on October 10, said the shortage is caused “as maintenance and repair delays leave more aircraft unavailable than planned.”

KLM gave four reasons:

  • unplanned maintenance
  • repairs to damaged aircraft
  • scheduled checks that are running past their planned end dates
  • spare parts that take longer than expected to arrive

The airline wants to keep extra long-haul aircraft in reserve so that a late fault does not force a cancellation on the day. Some flights are already being flown by a different aircraft type than planned. KLM says it will choose cancellations that affect the fewest passengers and leave them room to rebook.

NOS added that the Dutch transport inspectorate placed KLM’s maintenance division under closer supervision in May, and that KLM’s first Airbus A350 has arrived but is not yet flying passengers.

Item Detail
Cuts begin October 26, 2026
Cuts end Early March 2027 (exact date TBA)
Number of flights TBA
Routes affected TBA

What it means for non-revs

  • Winter loads out of Amsterdam will be tighter than the schedule suggests. Each cancelled flight moves its booked passengers onto the flights that remain.
  • Recheck your listing close to departure. KLM is cancelling ahead of time, so a flight you listed on weeks ago may no longer exist.
  • Watch for aircraft swaps. A smaller substitute aircraft can wipe out the open seats you were counting on, particularly in business class.
  • Delta and Air France employees who use KLM for connections should keep a backup routing in mind through early March.
