October 11, 2026 — Weekend talks to end Norway’s train drivers’ strike broke off on Sunday without a deal. The union says it has not decided to escalate, and no new talks are scheduled. State operator Vy’s cancellations remain posted through Wednesday, October 14.
This updates our October 10 story, when the two sides had just confirmed they were talking again.
What changed
- Talks ended. Discussions between the drivers’ union Norsk Lokomotivmannsforbund, Vy and employer group Spekter ended on Sunday, October 11, with no agreement, newspapers VG and Adresseavisen reported. The union’s leader told VG the union has ended talks for now.
- No escalation decided. The same union leader said no step-up of the strike has been decided. Date for new talks: TBA. Neither report mentions compulsory arbitration by the government.
- Scale. The strike began on September 18 and 72 drivers are out. VG says ten routes in eastern Norway were affected on Sunday.
- The dispute. It stems from the merger of Vy and the Flytoget airport express. The union wants Vy drivers raised to Flytoget pay levels, which the employers call excessive.
Cancellations posted by Vy
Vy’s strike page has not changed since Friday. It lists cancellations through Wednesday, October 14, and says later days appear about two days ahead.
| Line | Sunday, Oct 11 | Monday, Oct 12 |
|---|---|---|
| R14 | 27 departures cancelled (79%) | 32 (76%) |
| RE10 (serves Oslo Airport) | 16 (46%) | 29 (67%) |
| L1 | 50 (68%) | 24 (16%) |
| L2 | 30 (42%) | 29 (19%) |
| R21 | 29 (42%) | 23 (30%) |
| R22 | 18 (53%) | 12 (29%) |
| R13 (serves Oslo Airport) | Listed; figure not shown | 20 (26%) |
| L4 and R40 (Bergen) | Not listed | 2 each |
- No replacement buses. Vy says the part of its travel guarantee that promises alternative transport does not apply during a strike. Statutory rail passenger rights still apply.
- Flytoget. Vy’s page does not mention the airport express. Check Flytoget’s own site.
What it means for airline travelers
- Getting to Oslo Airport: do not rely on a Vy regional train this week. Check Flytoget or take the airport coach, and leave extra time.
- Plan for the strike to last. With talks broken off and none scheduled, assume cancellations continue past Wednesday. Vy posts each day’s list about two days ahead.
- Oslo–Gothenburg and Bergen: check Vy the day before. Look at long-distance buses if your train is cut.
- Refunds: ask Vy for a refund on any cancelled departure, and keep receipts for alternative transport.
