October 12, 2026 — Marriott Bonvoy is quietly testing an app screen that shows elite members how many complimentary upgrades are expected for their stay and where they stand in line, a setup that looks a lot like the upgrade lists airline people already know.
What is happening
One Mile at a Time and LoyaltyLobby both reported on October 11 that Marriott is running a beta feature in the Marriott Bonvoy app, and possibly on its website, titled “Your Complimentary Upgrade Status.” A member shared a screenshot in a Marriott fan group on Facebook. The test appears limited to select accounts or hotels, so most members cannot see it yet. Marriott had not commented publicly in either report.
| Detail | What has been reported |
|---|---|
| Program | Marriott Bonvoy (Marriott International) |
| Where | Marriott Bonvoy app (beta); possibly the website |
| Who | Elite members eligible for complimentary upgrades, particularly Platinum and above |
| What it shows | Estimated number of complimentary upgrades available and the member’s place in line |
| Confirmation | Marriott says it will confirm a complimentary upgrade one day before arrival |
| Not counted | Nightly Upgrade Awards, which take priority over complimentary upgrades |
| Wider rollout date | TBA |
Open questions
- The example screenshot showed zero upgrades available with the member second in line.
- LoyaltyLobby says the estimate reflects rooms matching the booked dates and bed type, but it is unclear which room and suite categories count.
- The list does not distinguish a high-floor room from a suite upgrade.
- Many upgrades are processed the night before or the morning of arrival, which may not line up with a one-day-ahead confirmation.
- Both writers wonder whether the tool is a step toward selling more paid upgrades; neither report confirms that. One Mile at a Time says there are “a lot more questions than answers.”
What it means for airline travelers
- A familiar model: If you work for an airline you already know how an upgrade list works. Just like an airline list, your position can move as higher-priority requests come in, including Nightly Upgrade Awards, which sit ahead of complimentary upgrades.
- Nothing changes yet: This is a limited beta. Upgrade benefits and how individual hotels apply them have not been officially changed, and individual hotels may still set their own priorities.
- Practical tip: If you see the screen, check it the day before arrival, when Marriott says confirmations come through, and do not count on a suite just because you are near the top of the list.
- Industry and airline-employee rates: Neither report says how stays booked on travel-industry or employee rates are treated in the upgrade list.
