October 15, 2026 — Mauritius has extended its nighttime curfew for two more nights and closed schools on Thursday and Friday, after police said they would act firmly to stop unrest spreading. The original curfew had been lifted on Wednesday morning, as reported yesterday.
What’s new since yesterday
- Curfew extended: Movement in designated areas is restricted from 8:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Wednesday night and Thursday night, ending Friday morning, October 16, according to AP. The first curfew covered Port Louis and several other towns.
- Arrests: Police arrested 26 more people during Wednesday night’s operations, on top of 94 arrests through Tuesday. Those arrested may face charges under the Prevention of Terrorism Act.
- Security: Police are adding patrols in affected areas and more roadblocks and vehicle checkpoints. Fuel sales in portable containers are restricted, but drivers can fill their vehicles as normal.
- Schools: Classes are cancelled on Thursday and Friday. A reopening date will be announced later (TBA).
- Roads: Roads were reported clear on Thursday morning.
- Background: Protests over water shortages and the cost of living escalated after a police officer shot and wounded a 27-year-old woman on Friday, October 9. The officer has been arrested.
Government advice
AP reports that Britain and Canada have warned travelers to avoid demonstrations and expect possible transport disruptions, and that the US Embassy cancelled scheduled services. The sources checked did not report any disruption at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport.
What it means for airline travelers
- If you arrive or depart in the evening, make sure your airport transfer gets you to your hotel, or to the airport, before the 8:30 p.m. curfew. Ask your hotel how the curfew applies to its area.
- Carry your passport and boarding pass or hotel booking at checkpoints, and allow extra time to get through roadblocks.
- Stay away from protests. Resort areas have not been named as affected, but conditions can change quickly.
- Flights were not reported disrupted, but if the unrest worsens, flights out could fill quickly. Have a backup option, and do not count on getting a standby seat on the last flight before a deadline.
- US citizens can register with STEP and Canadians with Registration of Canadians Abroad to receive embassy alerts.
