October 18, 2026 — Saturday’s nationwide cost-of-living protests in France turned violent, with looting, arson and clashes in Paris and several other cities. Paris police reported a record 855 arrests in the capital region, and AFP counts 1,800 arrests nationwide. President Macron was due to address the nation on Sunday evening.

What happened on October 17

  • Turnout: The interior ministry counted about 550,000 marchers nationally; the CGT union put it at about 800,000. AP reports about 110,000 in Paris.
  • Who called it: AFP says the “yellow and youth” protests were called by the Yellow Vest movement, after weeks of student protests over school conditions, with anger over living costs and high oil prices.
  • Paris: Unauthorized marches of several hundred to more than 1,000 people broke away from the main protest. AP reports damaged storefronts, ripped-up cobblestones and a burned car around Place de la République, plus looting and damage in other tourist and shopping areas of central Paris.
  • Other cities: Limoges’s 19th-century city hall was set on fire and gutted. A tourist office in Lyon burned. Protesters briefly forced their way into Marseille’s city hall lobby, and shops were looted in Marseille, Bordeaux, Nice and Strasbourg.
  • Injuries: AFP gives a provisional figure of about 500 police, firefighters and paramedics injured, and about 1,500 businesses damaged. Paris police said one person died of a heart attack.
  • US Embassy: The US Embassy in Paris issued a Demonstration Alert dated October 17.

What comes next

  • Further protest dates: TBA. The reports we checked did not give new dates for Yellow Vest or student protests.
  • Thursday, November 5 — national strike day: As we reported earlier, the CFDT, CGT, FO, UNSA and FSU unions have called a nationwide strike and protest day covering public and private sectors. C’est la grève (updated October 16) says the four main SNCF rail unions back it, so TGV, TER, Intercités and Transilien trains could be affected. No official train or RATP forecasts have been published yet (TBA); operators usually post them the day before.

What it means for airline travelers

  • Avoid protest areas, especially Place de la République and the routes of any announced marches. The police often ask RATP to close metro stations along march routes, so allow extra time getting across Paris.
  • Watch for new dates. Unrest of this scale can bring more protests at short notice. Check the US Embassy Paris alerts page and follow local news before you travel.
  • Plan around November 5. If you are flying standby into or out of Paris that week, avoid relying on trains or the RER to reach the airport that day. Allow extra time, or plan a taxi or ride-share, and be ready to fly a day earlier or later.
  • Keep valuables close in central Paris shopping and tourist areas, where looting took place.
  • Register with STEP (US) or Registration of Canadians Abroad so you receive embassy alerts.
