October 19, 2026 — A London court has frozen VietJet’s assets worldwide after the Vietnamese low-cost carrier failed to pay more than US$250 million in judgments owed to an aircraft lessor, according to reports published today.

What happened

Justice Pushpinder Saini of the UK Commercial Court granted a worldwide freezing order against VietJet on October 15, 2026. The order was sought by FW Aviation Holdings1 Limited (FWA), a Jersey-registered company controlled by London investment firm FitzWalter Capital. The judge found a risk that VietJet could move assets out of reach before the judgments were enforced.

The dispute dates back to four Airbus A321s delivered to VietJet in 2018–2019. The leases were terminated in October 2021 after VietJet stopped paying rent during COVID-19 lockdowns, and FWA had recovered all four jets by December 2022. In April 2025 the High Court ordered VietJet to pay about US$181.5 million in termination payments and unpaid rent. Interest and costs have pushed the total owed above US$250 million.

What is covered

Reports say the freeze reaches VietJet’s leased fleet, aircraft on order (including A330-900s and A321neos), engines and cabin equipment on order, pre-delivery payments, maintenance reserves, lease deposits, and ticket sale proceeds held by agents. VietJet can keep operating in the ordinary course of business but needs court permission for certain dealings involving assets outside Vietnam. The order does not cancel its aircraft orders.

The court also looked at agreements that moved almost all the value of VietJet’s future aircraft order book to a related company, Angelica Holding Limited, and the judge described the expected payments in return as “wholly illusory.” Vietnam’s legal system has refused to recognise the UK judgment, according to one report.

Knock-on effects

  • The court noted that VietJet had previously halted flights to Singapore by aircraft that could have been seized there under court orders.
  • VietJet’s application to Australia’s CASA for an air operator’s certificate to fly up to 10 Boeing 737s domestically under the name Cherrie Air faces a financial-viability review that the judgments could affect.
  • Planned Western Sydney–Ho Chi Minh City flights from January 10, 2027 have not been reported as changed. Whether existing Australian services are affected: TBA.

What it means for non-revs

  • VietJet has not announced any schedule changes, so flights are operating as normal for now. But the airline has pulled aircraft from a country before to avoid seizure, so short-notice cancellations to places outside Vietnam are a real risk.
  • If you are using an interline or ZED-style fare on VietJet to Singapore, Australia or other points outside Vietnam, have a backup carrier in mind and check your flight status close to departure.
  • Avoid tight connections from a VietJet flight onto a separate pass trip on another airline until the picture is clearer.
  • For airline people watching the industry: this is a reminder of how far lessors will go to collect, and how a legal fight can quietly reshape where an airline is willing to fly.
