October 21, 2026 — Kenya has confirmed a ninth case of Ebola (Bundibugyo virus disease), one more than reported on Monday, when the US raised Kenya’s travel advisory to Level 3. Health officials say every case belongs to a single family cluster and that all patients are improving.
What’s new since yesterday
- Ninth case: A 24-year-old man, a close relative of the first patient, developed symptoms while already in quarantine and tested positive on October 19. The Ministry of Health announced it on Tuesday, October 20.
- One cluster: Director-General for Health Patrick Amoth said all nine cases belong to one known cluster, with no evidence of spread outside it. The eight surviving patients are stable and responding to care.
- Contacts: 134 of 135 identified contacts have been traced and quarantined. Those quarantined on October 6 who stay symptom-free finish their 21-day monitoring and start going home from October 25.
- No restrictions: Kenya has not imposed any limits on travel, trade or public gatherings. A dedicated laboratory has been set up at Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi.
- Advisory: The US State Department advisory for Kenya remains at Level 3 (Reconsider Travel), raised on October 19 because of health risks.
What it means for airline travelers
- Safaris and Nairobi trips are not restricted by Kenya, but the US Level 3 advisory may affect your travel insurance. Check your policy before you go.
- Health checks can change quickly. Look at the CDC and the Public Health Agency of Canada before departure and before your return.
- Monitor your health for 21 days after travel, and talk to a travel clinic before you leave. Follow the official notices, not social media.
- Register with STEP (US) or Registration of Canadians Abroad.
