Local operators taking part in the November 20–21 general strike include GTT (Turin), Trentino Trasporti, EAV (Naples), Ferrotramviaria (Bari) and TFT rail lines in Tuscany, with regional disruption also expected in South Tyrol, Abruzzo, Calabria and Puglia. The Local says it is unclear how much the Bari air traffic stoppage on November 6 will affect flights.
What it means for airline travelers
- Avoid flying standby on the afternoon of November 21. A nationwide air traffic control stoppage from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on top of a general strike leaves little room if your flight is cancelled, and trains will be hit too.
- Malpensa on November 22: A 24-hour local air traffic control strike could disrupt flights all day. Linate or Bergamo may be worth checking as alternatives.
- Getting into Venice on November 13: The Atvo airport bus is out for 24 hours, so plan on a water bus, taxi or other bus line.
- Milan on November 13: Metro, trams and buses stop from 8:45 a.m. except during the 3 p.m.–6 p.m. guaranteed window.
- Italian strikes are often called off or shortened at the last minute. Check the operator’s website the day before.
