October 23, 2026 — Fregate Island, the private-island resort in the Seychelles that has been closed since February 2022, is now expected to welcome guests again toward the end of 2026, after a full rebuild of its villas and a long ecological restoration. Earlier announcements had pointed to an October 2026 return; no exact reopening date has been published (TBA).

What is happening

Tourism Update reported on October 22 that the island is set to reopen toward the end of this year with 17 villas and estates. When the rebuild was first announced in October 2025, Breaking Travel News said the resort would return in autumn 2026 with 14 newly built private pool villas and three estates, including The Owner’s Estate (the former Banyan Hill Estate), which has its own helipad, spa and cinema. The island is independently owned and operated, and its conservation work is run through the Fregate Island Foundation.

Detail Information
Property Fregate Island (private island resort)
Brand / owner Independent; privately owned and operated
Location Fregate Island, Seychelles (a 544-acre private island)
Status Closed since February 2022 for a rebuild and restoration
Reopening Toward the end of 2026 (exact date TBA); earlier guidance was October 2026
Accommodation 17 villas and estates (14 private pool villas and three estates)
Capacity Up to 76 guests, served by 211 staff
Getting there About 15 minutes by helicopter or about 90 minutes by boat from Mahé

Guests get a dedicated 24-hour butler and a buggy for getting around. The rebuilt resort includes an expanded Plantation House with an open kitchen, distillery and cigar lounge, a new spa and wellness area with a hyperbaric chamber and snow room, lit tennis and padel courts, an expanded Yacht Club, a new Sunset Bar at Mont Signal (the island’s high point), a museum and a conservation centre. There are seven beaches, including Anse Victorin, and Starlink connections in every villa. Water activities include snorkelling, sailing, game fishing and inter-island cruises.

Conservation is a big part of the stay: about 90% of the island is protected, it is home to more than 3,000 free-roaming Aldabra giant tortoises, and its beaches host roughly 1% of the world’s nesting hawksbill turtles, according to Tourism Update.

What it means for airline travelers

  • Gateway: Fregate transfers start from Mahé, home to Seychelles International Airport (SEZ). Wikipedia’s current airline list for SEZ shows service from Dubai (Emirates), Doha (Qatar Airways), Addis Ababa (Ethiopian Airlines), Nairobi (Kenya Airways), Mumbai (IndiGo), Frankfurt (Discover Airlines, plus seasonal Condor), seasonal Istanbul (Turkish Airlines) and seasonal Zürich (Edelweiss), along with Air Seychelles routes including Paris–Charles de Gaulle, Abu Dhabi and Johannesburg. Check current schedules before you travel.
  • No nonstops from North America: none appear on that list, so plan on connecting through a Gulf, European or African hub, and give yourself a buffer day before the island transfer.
  • Don’t book around a fixed date yet: the reopening has moved from “October” to “toward the end of 2026” with no confirmed day, so wait for the resort to confirm before locking in flights.
  • Rates: neither report mentions room rates, travel-industry or airline-employee rates.
