October 31, 2026 — The US Embassy in Tegucigalpa has warned US citizens to stay away from the Caribbean port city of Puerto Cortés through Sunday evening, after Honduran authorities reported a possible threat to bridges and roads leading into the port and city center.

What the embassy said

  • The threat: On October 30, Honduras’s Ministry of Security issued a statement about a potential threat to bridges and access routes into the Port of Puerto Cortés and the city center during the early morning hours of Saturday, October 31. Honduran authorities have increased security in the area.
  • When: The embassy advises avoiding Puerto Cortés from 6:00 p.m. Friday, October 30, until 6:00 p.m. Sunday, November 1, if possible. US government personnel have been told to stay away for the same period.
  • If you are already there: Avoid the bridges and access roads into the port and city center, especially in the early morning. Expect more security forces and delays.
  • Advisory level: Honduras remains at Level 3: Reconsider Travel because of crime and terrorism, with higher risk in some areas.

What it means for airline travelers

  • If your plans this weekend include a trip to Puerto Cortés or a stop at its port, postpone it until after 6:00 p.m. Sunday, November 1.
  • Follow local authorities and monitor local news. Keep your own security plans up to date.
  • Embassy contacts: +504 2238-5114 (after hours +504 2236-8497); from outside Honduras +1 301-985-8632.
  • US citizens should enroll in STEP; Canadians can use Registration of Canadians Abroad.
