November 1, 2026 — The Allied Pilots Association (APA), the union for American Airlines (AA) pilots, has withdrawn a warning that told Phoenix-based and transiting crews not to eat a tiramisu dessert on some crew meal trays because it might contain alcohol.
Airline: American Airlines (AA) · Country: United States
What happened
The APA’s Aeromedical–HIMS Committee had alerted pilots based in or passing through Phoenix (PHX) that a dessert supplied by the contracted caterer was made with alcohol that is not cooked off afterward. The union said it could not tell how much alcohol a serving held or whether it could affect a DOT alcohol test, so it recommended that no crew member eat it and that pilots accept an incomplete meal instead. The warning was shared on X on October 30.
In a later “PHX Crew Meal Update,” the APA said that after working with American’s Corporate Safety team, PHX Inflight, the caterer and others, it had confirmed “the desserts in question are safe to consume.” The update did not say what the review found. The union also reminded pilots in the HIMS program that large amounts of certain food additives or extracts can be a problem for abstinence monitoring. The date of the update was not given (TBA).
The rules behind the concern are strict: FAA regulations bar crew duty within eight hours of drinking alcohol and set a 0.04 alcohol concentration limit, as Aviation A2Z noted.
What it means for non-revs
There is no effect on pass travel or flight operations. The story matters to airline people because it shows how seriously alcohol testing is taken: even a dessert on a crew tray can raise a fitness-for-duty question.
- Crew members: The PHX dessert has now been cleared by the APA. If you are in a monitoring program, the union’s advice to watch food additives and extracts still stands.
- When in doubt, ask. The original warning told pilots worried about something they had already eaten to contact union representatives; that remains the route for any similar concern.
