
From the last steins in Munich to the first white truffles in Piedmont, Europe’s autumn calendar is crowded. These six events all fall within the next two weeks, and each is an easy transfer from a major airport.
1. Oktoberfest — Munich, Germany
When: Final weekend: through October 4, 2026
The world’s largest folk festival wraps up this weekend on the Theresienwiese, with the giant brewery tents, a funfair and a closing ceremony at the Bavaria statue on Sunday. Missed it? Stuttgart’s Cannstatter Volksfest, the world’s second-largest beer festival, runs through October 11 (fly into STR, then S2 or S3 to Bad Cannstatt).
Nearest airport: Munich Airport (MUC), about 40 km from the grounds.
Getting there: S-Bahn S1 or S8 to Hauptbahnhof, about 40–45 minutes, then a 15-minute walk or U4/U5 to Theresienwiese. A taxi takes 45–60 minutes. There is no visitor parking.
Good to know: Entry to the grounds and tents is free. Tents close their doors early on the last weekend, so without a reservation arrive in the morning.

2. Barcolana 58 — Trieste, Italy
When: October 2–11, 2026 (main regatta Sunday, October 11, 10:30 a.m.)
The world’s largest sailing regatta fills the Gulf of Trieste with sails, with a free village along the waterfront all week. Watch the start from the seafront or from the Karst hillside above the city.
Nearest airport: Trieste Airport (TRS), about 33 km from the city. Venice (VCE) is the larger alternative, about two hours away.
Getting there: The airport has its own rail station, with trains to Trieste Centrale in about 30 minutes. Bus G51 takes about an hour.
Good to know: Watching is free.

3. Fête des Vendanges de Montmartre — Paris, France
When: October 7–11, 2026
The harvest festival of Paris’s last working vineyard draws well over a million visitors to the hill below Sacré-Cœur. Expect a regional food and wine trail, free concerts and a grand costumed parade on Saturday, October 10.
Nearest airport: Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG), about 25 km. Orly (ORY) also works via metro line 14.
Getting there: RER B from CDG to Gare du Nord, about 35 minutes, then metro line 2 or 4 or a 20-minute walk uphill. Metro lines 2, 4, 12 and 13 serve the area.
Good to know: All official programming is free; you pay only at the food and wine stands. Car access to the hill is restricted from October 9.

4. Festival of Lights — Berlin, Germany
When: October 9–18, 2026, nightly 7–11 p.m.
Berlin’s landmarks, including the Cathedral, the TV Tower and Potsdamer Platz, become canvases for large-scale light art and projection mapping. This year’s theme is “Colours of Love,” and the whole thing is easy to cover on foot over an evening or two.
Nearest airport: Berlin Brandenburg (BER), about 25–30 km from the centre.
Getting there: The FEX airport express and regional trains reach Hauptbahnhof in about 30 minutes; the S9 runs to Friedrichstraße and Alexanderplatz.
Good to know: The outdoor illuminations are open-air street viewing; the concert series at the Cathedral (October 13–17) is ticketed.

5. Fiestas del Pilar — Zaragoza, Spain
When: October 10–18, 2026
One of Spain’s biggest city festivals: a week of street parades, concerts and fireworks. The centrepiece is the Ofrenda de Flores on October 12, when costumed groups build a vast mantle of flowers for the Virgin in Plaza del Pilar, starting at dawn.
Nearest airport: Zaragoza Airport (ZAZ), about 16 km from the centre, with limited service. Most travellers fly into Madrid (MAD) or Barcelona (BCN).
Getting there: From ZAZ, bus 501 runs to the centre in 40–50 minutes; a taxi takes 20–25. From Madrid or Barcelona, the AVE high-speed train reaches Zaragoza-Delicias in roughly 1 hour 20 to 1 hour 30.
Good to know: Street events are free; headline concerts are ticketed. Hotels are tight around October 10–12.

6. International Alba White Truffle Fair — Alba, Italy
When: Opens October 10, 2026 and runs to December 6
The world’s leading white-truffle event opens next weekend in the Langhe wine hills. The truffle market is the heart of it, alongside cooking shows and Barolo and Barbaresco tastings.
Nearest airport: Turin (TRN), about 90 km. Milan Malpensa (MXP), 160–180 km away, is the better bet for long-haul.
Getting there: The Turin–Alba rail service calls at Turin airport’s station and takes about 1.5 hours. By car it is about 1 hour 15.
Good to know: The truffle market is ticketed and runs mainly on weekends; check the fair’s site for hours. Book restaurants well ahead.
