October 3, 2026 — Turkmenistan’s State Migration Service launched an electronic visa system on Thursday, October 1, AFP reports. Travelers can now apply without visiting a consulate. Key details, including which nationalities qualify, have not been published.
The details
- Categories: tourism, business (up to 30 days) and humanitarian, according to the visa service Visamundi.
- Invitation letter: no longer needed for tourist visas, Visamundi says. It is still required for business and humanitarian visas.
- Processing: seven business days standard, with faster paid options, per Visamundi.
- Passport: at least six months’ validity.
- Registration: foreign visitors must still register separately after arrival.
- Not published: eligible nationalities, fees, maximum tourist stay and permitted entry points are all TBA.
- AFP notes the rules remain vague and that visits are likely to stay tightly controlled. We have not confirmed that US or Canadian passports are eligible.
What it means for airline travelers
- Do not book yet. Wait until Turkmenistan confirms that your passport qualifies and what it costs.
- Apply before you fly. A visa cannot be sorted out at the gate, and standby travelers get no extra leeway.
- Check passport validity: six months is the stated minimum.
- Use the official portal only, and be wary of look-alike visa sites.
