October 6, 2026 — American Airlines (AA) will let main cabin passengers reserve buy-on-board food before they fly, starting with Dallas/Fort Worth–Los Angeles flights on October 20. The airline is also dropping five routes in early 2027 as it slows its summer growth.

What happened

Food preorder in coach. View from the Wing reported on October 6 that American is launching “reserved buy on board.” Customers pick a paid food item in the app or on aa.com, the item is loaded for that flight, and the card is charged when a flight attendant hands it over. The aim is to stop popular items running out before the cart reaches the back rows.

Item Detail
Ordering opens October 13, 2026
First flights October 20, 2026, Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) to Los Angeles (LAX)
Order window From seven days to 20 hours before departure
Payment Charged automatically when the item is delivered on board
Elites Executive Platinum and ConciergeKey members can reserve their complimentary item
Next markets Added monthly; which routes and when: TBA
Full rollout Eligible domestic flights by the end of the first quarter of 2027

The launch menu runs from $5 for kettle corn to $14 for a chicken ranch wrap meal. A fruit and cheese plate is $13 and a snack box is $10.

Five routes dropped. AirlineGeeks reported on October 5 that American is ending five routes and moderating its summer 2027 expansion. A spokesperson called the cuts “targeted actions to strengthen the airline.”

Route Ends
Phoenix (PHX) – Provo (PVU) January 2027; exact date TBA
Miami (MIA) – Tulum (TQO) January 2027; exact date TBA
Miami (MIA) – Montreal (YUL) January 2027; exact date TBA
Chicago O’Hare (ORD) – Lincoln (LNK) April 2027; exact date TBA
Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) – Albany (ALB) Will not return for summer 2027

On the other side of the ledger, American will resume New York JFK–Seattle in April 2027 with a daily Airbus A321neo and move its Bozeman flights from LaGuardia to JFK in June 2027.

What it means for non-revs

  • Whether pass riders can preorder is not stated. The window closes 20 hours before departure, well before most standbys know which flight they will be on. Assume you cannot, and check Jetnet if you are an American employee.
  • Bring your own food on DFW–LAX. Reserved items are loaded for the people who ordered them. How much extra stock is boarded for walk-up sales has not been published. If you clear late into a back row, do not count on the cart.
  • Crew: a new step in the service. Flight attendants will be matching reserved items to seats on test flights from October 20. The service flow for that has not been made public.
  • Five fewer nonstops to list on. Provo, Tulum and Lincoln travelers on American will need a different hub or a connection once those routes end. Use them while they last if they are your commute.
  • No change to pass policy or boarding priority in either announcement.
