October 6, 2026 — British Airways (BA) will strip 88 economy seats out of each Airbus A380 and turn the whole upper deck into a 106-seat business class cabin. Separately, a BA Boeing 777 bound for Chicago lost cabin pressure on October 5 and returned to London Heathrow.

What happened

A380 refit. British Airways announced new cabins for all 12 of its A380s on October 5. Each aircraft drops from 469 seats to 417. Economy shrinks by 88 seats, while premium economy grows by 29 and business class by nine. The upper deck becomes all Club Suite, which BA calls the largest business class cabin in the world. Premium economy moves down to the main deck.

Cabin Seats now Seats after refit Change
First 14 12 -2
Club World (business) 97 106 +9
World Traveller Plus (premium economy) 55 84 +29
World Traveller (economy) 303 215 -88
Total 469 417 -52

The first refitted aircraft is due in service “in the coming months.” BA has not published an exact date, a completion date for the fleet, or the routes that get the new cabins first: all TBA. Chief executive Sean Doyle called it “a major milestone for British Airways and the future of our A380 fleet.”

First class service. BA also rolled out new first class amenity kits, bedding, tableware and a “From the Grill” menu between October 1 and 6, One Mile at a Time reports. Crew training on the new service is still under way.

Lounges. A new lounge in Heathrow Terminal 5C is due at the end of 2028. Work on an arrivals lounge starts in early 2027, InsideFlyer reports.

Flight BA295 returns to Heathrow after pressure loss

On Monday, October 5, flight BA295 from London Heathrow (LHR) to Chicago O’Hare (ORD) lost cabin pressure at 36,000 feet over the Irish Sea, about 40 nautical miles south of Dublin, according to AeroInside. Passenger oxygen masks dropped. The crew descended to 9,000 feet in about seven minutes, dumped fuel and landed back at Heathrow on runway 27L roughly four hours after the pressure loss.

The aircraft was Boeing 777-200ER G-VIIA, which InsideFlyer says is 30 years old. No injuries were reported. British Airways described the cause only as a technical issue. AirlineGeeks reports most passengers were rebooked on Tuesday, October 6. When G-VIIA returns to service: TBA.

What it means for non-revs

  • Fewer economy seats on every refitted A380. Each aircraft loses 88 economy seats, nearly three in ten. If your staff travel or ZED agreement puts you in economy only, the A380 becomes a harder standby than it is today.
  • More premium seats, if you can use them. Premium economy and business grow by 38 seats per aircraft. That helps only travelers whose agreements allow premium cabins. Check your own carrier’s terms with BA.
  • The change arrives one aircraft at a time. For a long stretch BA will fly both layouts. The seat count on your flight depends on which A380 turns up, so check the seat map close to departure.
  • Watch for aircraft swaps. A380s must come out of service to be refitted. BA has not said how it will cover the flying. Expect some substitutions on A380 routes, though that is an inference and not an announced plan.
  • London–Chicago this week. One 777 is out of service after BA295 and its passengers were rebooked onto October 6 flights. Loads on that route will be heavier than usual for a day or two.
