India: Police Stop Opposition March in Central New Delhi, More Rallies Dated

October 6, 2026 — Update to our October 5 story. The opposition march on the Election Commission went ahead in central New Delhi on Tuesday. Police stopped it on Parliament Street and briefly detained its leaders. The opposition has dated more protests through late November.

What happened on October 6

  • The march: About 300 opposition members of parliament gathered at Parliament at 10:30 am and set off at 11 am toward the Election Commission’s headquarters.
  • Stopped: Police halted the march on Parliament Street. Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other MPs were detained, taken away by bus and later released.
  • Security: About 4,000 police and paramilitary personnel were deployed, and orders restricting gatherings were in force in New Delhi district.
  • Traffic: Curbs began at 8 am on routes including Connaught Place to Parliament Street, Ashoka Road and Jantar Mantar Road. Police told commuters to use the Metro.
  • Metro: We could not verify reports of entry and exit closures at central stations.
  • Strikes: No bandh or transport strike has been announced.

What it means for airline travelers

  • Disruption was limited to central New Delhi and to daytime hours. No report mentioned Delhi airport or flights.
  • On rally days in Delhi, avoid road travel through Connaught Place and the Parliament area. Use the Metro, including the Airport Express, and allow extra time.
  • November 1 and November 26 are the next large Delhi dates. Plan hotel and airport transfers around them.
  • Stay away from protest sites. Police detained marchers and restrictions on gatherings can be imposed quickly.
  • Standby travelers should leave earlier than usual for the airport on those days.
