FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla., October 8, 2026 — Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport (VPS) closes to all operations at 9 p.m. Central time tonight, Thursday, October 8, as Hurricane Isaias heads for the northern Gulf Coast. The airport has not set a reopening time.
What is happening
- Closure starts: 9 p.m. Central, Thursday, October 8, 2026. No aircraft operations are allowed after that.
- Reopening: TBA. The airport says it “will reopen as soon as it is safe to do so.”
- Also closing at the same time: Destin Executive Airport (DTS) and Bob Sikes Airport (CEW) in Crestview, Okaloosa County’s two general aviation fields.
- Not a shelter: the terminals cannot be used as storm shelters.
- Evacuations: a mandatory evacuation of Okaloosa County’s coastal Zones A and B took effect at noon Thursday. County public transport is suspended from Friday, October 9.
- The storm: Isaias became a hurricane on Thursday with winds of about 80 mph. Landfall is forecast late Friday, October 9, or early Saturday, October 10. AccuWeather expects a strong Category 2 at landfall. Hurricane warnings run from Ocean Springs, Mississippi, to the Bay/Gulf county line in Florida.

Neighbouring airports
Pensacola (PNS), Panama City (ECP), Mobile (MOB) and Gulfport-Biloxi (GPT) are all named in the airline alerts. We found no closure announcement for any of them in the sources we checked today, so their status for Friday and Saturday is TBA. The FAA’s daily report for October 8 also warns that Isaias may close overwater routes in the Gulf.
What it means for non-revs
- Thursday is the last chance out of VPS, and seats will be scarce. Evacuees and passengers using Southwest’s alert, which already covers October 8, will fill the final departures. Airlines may also cancel late flights before the 9 p.m. cut-off.
- No flights Friday, and probably none Saturday. The airport is closed until further notice, and landfall is forecast late Friday or early Saturday. Do not list for VPS on either day.
- Do not count on PNS, ECP or MOB as a backup. They sit in the same hurricane warning area and under the same airline alerts.
- Expect a hangover into next week. Revenue passengers can rebook through October 13 on Delta and United and through October 24 on Southwest. Loads to and from the Panhandle will stay high after the airport reopens.
- Gulf crossings may be slower. If the FAA closes overwater Gulf routes, flights that cross the Gulf can be rerouted and delayed. Leave room for misconnects.
- If you are already there: follow the county’s evacuation orders. The terminal is not a shelter.
