October 9, 2026 — Update to our October 8 story. Isaias strengthened to a Category 3 hurricane with 120 mph winds, and the US National Hurricane Center now expects landfall on the northern Gulf Coast Friday evening. Pensacola’s airport terminal was due to close Friday morning, Georgia has declared a statewide emergency, and hotel workers in Chicago walked out as marathon weekend began.

Where the storm is

  • Advisory 12, 10 am CDT Friday: Winds of 120 mph, Category 3. The centre was about 195 miles south of Pensacola, moving north-northeast at 16 mph.
  • Landfall: Inside the hurricane warning area Friday evening. The Hurricane Center names no town. Fox Weather’s own estimate is between Pensacola and Destin, 9 pm to midnight Eastern.
  • Inland: Hurricane-force winds may reach up to 100 miles inland into southern Alabama. Isaias should be post-tropical by late Saturday.
  • Warnings: Unchanged. The Hurricane Warning runs from Ocean Springs, Mississippi, to the Bay/Gulf County line, Florida. The Storm Surge Warning runs from the mouth of the Mississippi River to the Suwannee River, Florida.
  • Rain: 4–8 inches, locally 15, across southern Alabama, the Florida Panhandle and Big Bend and southwest Georgia. 2–5 inches, locally 10, elsewhere in the Southeast.
  • Next advisories: 1 pm and 4 pm CDT Friday.

Storm surge forecast

Coast Surge
Alabama/Florida border to Grayton Beach, Florida 6–9 feet
Grayton Beach to Indian Pass, Florida 4–7 feet
Dauphin Island to the Alabama/Florida border; Indian Pass to the Steinhatchee River 4–6 feet
Mouth of the Mississippi to Dauphin Island; lower Mobile Bay; Steinhatchee to Suwannee River 3–5 feet
Suwannee River to Yankeetown; upper Mobile Bay 2–4 feet

Airports, rail and evacuations

  • Pensacola (PNS): WEAR-TV reports the terminal closes to commercial flights at 10 am Friday, with reopening expected Saturday or Sunday after damage checks. We saw no notice on the airport’s own site.
  • Destin-Fort Walton Beach (VPS): Still closed “until further notice”. Reopening is TBA.
  • Panama City (ECP): The airport’s October 8 statement says it is open. We found no October 9 update.
  • Mobile, Gulfport-Biloxi, New Orleans, Tallahassee: No closure found in anything we opened. Status is TBA.
  • Amtrak: The Weather Channel reports the Crescent is cancelled through Sunday and Mardi Gras Service should resume Monday.
  • Florida evacuations (press reports): Mandatory for Zones A and B in Escambia County, including Pensacola Beach and Perdido Key. Walton County’s order is now mandatory; zones are TBA.
  • Alabama: Orange Beach has ordered coastal visitors out. State government buildings are closed Friday in nine counties.
  • Georgia (new): Governor Brian Kemp declared a state of emergency for all 159 counties. A flood watch covers metro Atlanta, and north Georgia could see gusts to 50 mph.
  • Canadian advisory: Unconfirmed. Daily Hive reports Canada advises against non-essential travel to the warned coast. Canada’s US page showed no such text when we checked.

Chicago hotel strike

  • Who: UNITE HERE Local 1. Members walked out Friday morning, October 9.
  • Where: NBC Chicago names the Millennium Knickerbocker, Palmer House Hilton, Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk, Waldorf Astoria Chicago and Westin Chicago River North, plus a sixth Westin property.
  • How long: TBA. The number of strikers is TBA.
  • Could it spread? The union says other hotels could follow at any time. Talks cover more than 7,000 workers at 46 hotels.
  • Timing: It is Chicago Marathon weekend. Contracts expired August 31.

What it means for airline travelers

  • Do not list into the warning area Friday or Saturday. Pensacola and Destin are shut, and other Gulf airports can close with little notice.
  • Expect days of full flights. Displaced revenue passengers are rebooked first once airports reopen.
  • Atlanta is in the path of the remnants. Saturday wind and rain could delay connections at ATL, Birmingham and Montgomery.
  • Check the airport’s own site before driving. Reopening times depend on damage checks.
  • In an evacuation zone? Follow the county order. Airport terminals are not shelters.
  • Chicago layovers: Struck hotels stay open but may cut housekeeping and food service. Ask your hotel before arrival.
